If anyone's looking for work, Solar City is hiring a lot site surveyors and solar panel installers, no experience necessary but roofing experience is a plus. Pros: Good company to work for, its a good paying job, has pretty decent health benefits and you get a nice hiring bonus which a lot of people use for moving closer to work. Cons: its in Maryland. Most of the guys I work with that own guns live in Sterling and commute about an hour or so up. Send me a message or an Email if interested.

Been out for a year now, last contract I was on killed me career wise.  Most of my stuff is dated after working 9 years on the same software that was already 10 years old when I came on board.

Looking for a job, anywhere from north half of Richmond up through Woodbridge and Manassas; I'm in Stafford.  I'd rather not go straight up 95 unless it's next to a VRE stop.

I've been mostly a maintenance coder but love tinkering will all the other stuff so I've got some Linux (CentOS 5 & 6), I've done older MSSQL Administration, I know my way around SQL well enough, a little Windows Admin, some basic network and firewall, etc.  I'm an IT handyman of sorts which nobody wants, it's all 10+ years of specifically working on MSSQL 2008 or .NET 4.5 or Java web development.

The most traction I've gotten is in some form of Linux Admin role and I've had an eye on the new DevOps stuff or integrator positions that combine a lot of different areas.

I really have no direction other than whatever someone wants of me at this point.  I need a foot in somewhere and to stop bleeding; I'll work it out from there.

Any jobs for dinosaurs out there?

I have skills no one even teaches anymore.

Ex-nuclear power plant operator and mechanic. Last job in Navy was rebuilding RSD's (Hydraulic helicopter landing systems for Cruisers.) Some experience with machine tools and tooling. I ran the tool room for a local manufacturing plant for 18 months. Also good with MIG and stick welding. Ran my own cycle and sidecar upholstery shop for 18 years. I can spell "computer". So that makes me computer literate. Not looking to re-locate since no one pays techs like me enough to do that anymore. I live in Chesapeake.

How about it? Anyone here still work in the physical universe? Or is everything somehow done in virtual reality anymore?

Bumping this up because I am looking for something better.

I need a career.  Hopefully over 50k annual that doesn't require college.

Any suggestions?

I like auditing, compliance and safety, and I am shopping insurance type jobs as well.

Another bump for an old thread.

The company I worked for got bought by a company focused on logistics and I got let go in the transition. No worries, logistics is a low margin business.

I'm a former engineer-become-manager. Worked in semiconductors, logic design and simulation, data storage, consumer electronics, government contracting, hybrid renewable energy sources for military applications, "light" business development, consulting, and as program director.

I like the entrepreneurial side of business and would like to be in a commercial operation that wants some drive and creativity to grow. Not content to occupy a labor category. I do the next smart thing for the business, a-la Theory of Constraints, which takes me through product development, portfolio management, business development, and operations.

I also have an active clearance. Will stay in VA or go home to CO. Any love?
