Hello,
I am looking for housing advice. A relative just got a airline job based out of O'Hare International Airport.  They are on the west coast and have just a couple of weeks to secure housing.

Looking for a safe area

Within 30-40 minutes of the airport

No Car so Taxi or public transportation

Looking for a small apartment or similar

What can they expect as far as housing cost?

How safe is the public transportation? Single female

Also a list of places to avoid and things to not do
and safe areas.

Thanks

I live so close to O'Hare airport that the planes are at even elevation with my balcony as they pass on take offs and landings and I have a few questions before suggesting an area:

1) Does said relative own any EBRs or full capacity mags for pistols or rifles?
2) Does said relative care about living in area with a decent night life?
3) Is this a day shift or nigh/grave yard shift job? (relates to public transportation schedules)

no firearms
she is a flight attendant so I am assuming that the schedule will vary
cost and a safe area are the pressing issues

Jefferson Park, Portage Park neighborhoods close to train straight to O'Hare.

Ditto these, you can get right to the Blue Line on the El (subway).

She should ask other stews where they get places. If she zeroes in on anything in Portage or Jeff, IM me the address and I'll ask some buds in 16th and 17th CPD. Chi can get quite varied even block-by-block.

I like the suggestions that came up so far. Schiller Park might also work.

Anywhere off the Blue Line on the North Side will be decent.  It's just a matter of what she's looking for neighborhood-wise.  If she's younger, Wicker Park / Bucktown / Logan Square will be the places to live.

If she's older and wants more peace and quiet, Jefferson Park, etc. would be my recommendation.

As will all things Chicago, it is the big city and she needs to be alert / aware no matter where she lives.

Here's an interesting / informative site on violence in Chicago (yes the name is hey jackass LOL):

Thanks for the suggestions everyone

It looks like she found housing in  Berwyn.  Is that a good area?

Also she will be taking her car, How soon does she have to register it?
Fees?

Thanks

Berwyn is not the greatest area but it is not the worst either.

Her commute is going to suck however. Tell her not to take rt43 aka Harlem Ave to O'Hare. It goes from two lanes in each direction to one for a few miles and just sucks in that stretch. I suggest taking Mannheim but to watch out for the Stone Park speed trap between Lake Street and North Ave.

BER-WYN?!

(Sorry, had to get the Svengoolie reference in there.)

My sister used to work in Naperville and catch the BNSF train in Berwyn.  It's a working class suburb.
