Hello everyone, recently joined the forum after purchasing my first AR.  I am located in Northern Chicagoland and was wondering if anyone could recommend any carbine with sidearm courses or outdoor ranges in the area, thank you.

Hello, Jermz!

You can go up to Wisconsin. There's McMiller in Eagle, WI and Bristol in Kenosha County, just over the border.

Then there's the Aurora Sportsman Club.

We're rather sparse on outdoor places to shoot. If you're close to the WI border, you're better going north.

Try the Personal Prptection Academy.  They use the range up at Bristol. I can give you Deb's number if you IM me.  I would recommend an intro course to the AR if your new to learn basic functions and manipulation before moving on to transitions.

I'm familiar with ARs having spent 6 years in the military as an MP but it has been a while since I've done any real tactical shooting.

Were you looking for an intro to defensive carbine course, or something that was a little faster paced and geared to cover, movement, and communication?

We do both, beginning in the spring.  We have a private outdoor range in Oswego.  We have 11 AR rifles in various configurations and optics (Aimpoint, Eotec, ACOG, Vortex, irons) that are available for intro, so that you can get an idea what works for you before you buy.  Transitions are part of both courses, but are REALLY emphasized in the Level II.   Our Carbine courses are taught by LE Instructors, as well as industry professionals that specialize in AR builds.

We also do civilian Force on Force workshops in Morton Grove.
