I haven't done any predator calling in years.  That was back East and in heavily wooded terrain.

I don't know anything about local regs. so season and tag info would be helpful.  I plan on buying an electronic call and could use some recommendations on a good brand/model for under $250 or so.  Also, is open terrain good enough hunting or should I go up toward the mountain?

Thanks!

I hate the term "resident expert".

No license needed unless trapping (traps can only be used when a trapping season is open) or if you are selling the hides.
Yotes are where they are. High, low and in between.

Mouth calls work just as well as electronics and cost less but require more attention to detail and movement when setting up. As far as electronics go, I like FoxPro .

For every One Coyote Hunter you know there are fifty others you don't know.

If you think you have a super secret spot someone else knows about it also.

Coyotes aren't mythical creatures.
To be a successful Coyote Hunter there is more to look for than just tracks.

Some types of birds will tell you a Coyote might be coming.

Sorry cs,

I hate the term expert as well and I hate when people call me a "gun expert."

As a matter of fact I hate when Rick Harrison on Pawn Stars says "let me call in an expert." It goes right through me.

So, I FIFY.

Thanks to all of you who supplied input!

I plan on going out at night and am going to be using NODs, IR illuminator with IR laser and thermal.  Shooting will be done with a suppressed 5.56 using standard velocity ammo.

The plan is to quad in to where I've seen a bunch then set up on the electronic caller, spot for them with the thermal then do the shooting with the NODs and Laser.

Sounds simple enough but how's their night vision?  Should I worry more about movement at night or scent and noise?

Thanks!

The FoxPro Shockwave is quite a piece of equipment!

It's going to take me a month just to learn to use it... does anyone have any favorite calling "sequences" that they would be willing to share?

I work at night doing security and haven't been seeing near as many yotes during my patrols.  This confuses me because I thought that they would be even more active during the colder temps moving and hunting to stay warm at night.  Maybe they just moved to lower elevations?  Rabbit activity has slowed in the area too so maybe they have moved to find a different source of food?

Don't know...

Thanks!

To each their own. Me personally, after the photos, the birds/Coyote s/maggots gots to eat too. I just pitch em in a ditch or bush out of sight. Sometimes I use a local store/f&g or school dumpster.

If you plan on keeping any part of the dog you will need a Trapper's license.

Not how the regs read. Although this is how several f&g officers have tried to make it seem.

Regs read if you are TRAPPING furbearers or coyote or SELLING HIDES FOR PROFIT, then you need a trappers permit.

No license needed to shoot coyote or to remove their hide for personal use.

NRS 503.454  Trapping license required; unlawful to remove or disturb trap, snare or similar device of licensee.
     1.  Every person who takes fur-bearing mammals by trap, snare or similar device or unprotected mammals by trapping or sells raw furs for profit shall procure a trapping license.

I guess I got that wrong, crapshoot.

Hope I'm not drifting in this thread too much. Crapshoot, I've hunted coyotes for about 5 years and wonder...why do some critters completely dispose of coyotes and then other carcasses get barely touched? I'm taking going back a week later to an old kill. Some completely vanish and others seem hardly touched.

The same reason I found an elk gut pile completely untouched and dry and hard to the touch I guess. Nothing was around or hungry. Your guess is as good as mine.
