In his proposed budget, Walker has proposed eliminating state property taxes.

Where will it be made up? Sales tax? Wheel tax? gas tax? All of the above?

Smaller government tax?

I'd vote for that.

Eliminating a few social programs could save everyone thousands.

The property taxes on my cabin and house have gone down every year since his election.
I'm now retired, and property taxes are one of my largest expenses.
I'd be curious to know how the $$$ is raised without it, but I'd be glad to see it go.

Be interesting to see.  Much like other states who don't have XXX tax, they make up for it otherwise.

Maybe vehicle registration costs based on value of vehicle? (Arizona)
Maybe annual personal property tax?  (VA I think)

My property taxes have gone up...because the city keeps raising the valuation. between the city and MATC, they're the ones who have actual increases IIRC.

While i enjoy paying less for stuff, won't this pretty much destroy public school funding and other municipal projects?

Or will cities/counties continue taxing property for local projects and education spending boosts?

they will actually have to live within their means rather than getting overtime for their cousins, kids, and themselves.

they ability to raise taxes whenever they feel like it is insane

building ridiculous schools that don't teach anything meaningful anymore anyway the only way to stop the spread of godless amoral social and cultural Marxism
is to cut back on education-brainwashing.

maybe then the kids will actually have a future other than the dystopian Cloward-Piven world coming down on us all...thanks to them.

social programs given to illegal aliens deport them might help
social programs given to the refugees from Chicago started this mess
that and the socialists from NY and Illinois who took over Wi politics.

The bigger problem is that agencies need to pay for their own shit. We need to break the cycle of the state giving aid to municipalities and the Feds giving state aid.  Grant programs are looked at as free money by local agencies but they all come with strings attached.  "Want some federal $$ for a new highway? Sure we'll pay for half, but you have to lower your speed limits and hire 6 Chinese Hawaiian refugees."

If the state and local agencies self-fund then we could break the federal monopoly and power.

Most, if not all, property taxes have the city/county share in them.  Even if there was no state tax, I'd still have property taxes taken by the locals.  There is a breakdown on my yearly statement as to how much goes to who.

I do agree with the below though, schools need to do usefull stuff with money.  How does building a megafootball field help students grades?  Does the football team sell enough paraphenilia to pay for that megafield?

This, but with grammar and punctuation where needed (A joke given the topic)
I hear you, feel you, and agree.
We are trying like all hell to keep our kids out of public schools if we can.  And.....we can.

Yeah I don't agree with subsidizing a few dozen parents attempt at the NFL/NBA lotto.

Every level of government needs accountability, from school board to county, state to the Feds.

The money shell game makes a hard task impossible.

It's projected to be in 2020. I don't know what the source of that is, but I'd take it with a grain of salt, because the left always takes the budget numbers REQUESTED by the various agencies and runs with them as if they'll get everything asked for, as opposed to the actual budget where things are trimmed down.

Need to see the background/both sides of the story here. It's possible that some bills may have been put off for the future and are depending on revenue projections to cover them for the future.

Curiousity got the better of me.  Looked at taxes online.

State: 15.85
County: 614.11
City: 787.77
Vocational: 114.24
School-Janesville: 753.26

$16 dollars.

Property taxes need to stop entirely. I don't care about the wailing and nashing of their budgetary woes. Find some other way to pilfer the money.

Property taxes are the abolition of private property. You can never stop paying, so you never really own it. You're renting it from the county. They stole every single parcel.
The entire premise should be rejected on principal.

And here's what I'm talking about. The headlines used proposed numbers, not actual numbers.

Be sure to read the article all the way through, because projected future budgets also claim a deficit.

Budget breakdown

As bad as the concept of property taxes is, I think personal property taxes are 10X worse. You pay income tax on the money you earned to buy something...I'll just call it XYZ. You then must pay sales tax when you spend that money to buy XYZ, and then you get taxed again just for owning XYZ. (good thing that doesn't apply to guns ... or does it?)

Then when you die, if you leave XYZ in your will to someone, there's yet another tax on XYZ.

Another bad concept is sales tax on used vehicles. I recently bought a used Jeep Wrangler. I'm the 3rd owner. The 1st owner paid a sales tax on it at the original dealer (it should've ended there), as did the 2nd, and now it's my turn. And if I sell it, it'll be taxed yet again.

Preach it, Brother.

It's never about what's sensible, correct, reasonable, or right. It's about what they can get away with, and so far they've gotten away with stealing every privately held tangible thing on the entire continent.

While I would love to see that too, I think the inevitable conclusion if that occurred would be that house prices would just climb to fill the void, just like what happened when interest rates went down. You couldn't actually afford more house, you could just afford to pay more for the same house.

While that might happen, it's better the seller gets more than the govt.

Why do I pay more if my home is valued higher?  Do I somehow receive more benefits from government? No.
