Howdy gents. Today I traded for an AR and was in a rush. Bad right off the bat I know. Well, get it home and lo and behold on the mag well under some electrical tape is a metal plate that has been glued/ epoxied/who knows what on. So, what would be a good method to get it off without screwing up the finish?

Can you go back to the seller to find out exactly what was used?
If so, then contact the manufacturer of the glue.

superglue, soak in acetone

Epoxy-high heat and work at it with a soft tool, like a piece of wood.

Just a thin metal plate with a name and date on it.

I ordered a plastic chisel, hoping that will work. If the finish gets helmed, there's always cerakote!

Methylene Chloride will dissolve epoxy. It will probably eat the finish off the receiver too, but if it's super hard epoxy that you would otherwise have to chisel off, that could be your only option. Hard to tell without knowing what epoxy it is.

Methylene Chloride is sold as Kleanstrip brand paint stripper. Just look for methylene chloride as an active ingredient.

Got the plate off, without harming the finish. Some glue still on, acetone, CLP, goo gone won't touch it.
