Hi everyone.  I will be relocating to the Washington county area from Illinois.  I have been researching the wis. laws and it looks likemy guns are all good and in the clear but my cars are in a question.

2 of my cars are tinted both are darker than what is legal here and in wisconsin, one is 35% f&r the other is 35f and 15% rear. The second car also doesnt have a front plate.  I have had the second car set up this way for about 7yrs( longer than front window tint was legal fyi) been pulled over a few times and nothing was said about the missing plate or the window tint.  The other car is more resently tinted but nothing was said when i got pulled over for a burned out headlight.

My question is how strictly are these inforced?  Should i get it fixed before i move?

Thanks,

-mrlRouge13b

My wife's car has dark tinted windows and never had an issue. As far as the front plate, I work at a car dealer and we always tell customers you must have a front plate but I've never heard of anyone getting a ticket, maybe a warning but that's all. Keep in mind, say you go to dinner and have a few drinks and you drive home in a tinted window, no front plate vehicle, you might be more likely to be stopped. Just my two cents worth.

5% front. Rear can be as dark as you want.

Put the front plate on just to avoid being hassled. You can just screw in some lags to hold it on without the brackets. YMMV.

Really depends on what neighborhood you're in.  Neighborhoods where drugs/gangs/etc are rampant, you'll get nailed for both often.

Most anywhere else...as long as you're not driving like an idiot, you're probably fine.

50% tint is legal, 5% is super dark
A few cars get passes on front plates, chiefly corvettes and exotics. While still not legal they most likely won't bother you for it.

A friends runs really dark tint and never got caught for it, he's had more then a few meetings with officer friendly. I would say neither are prime enforcement objectives.

BTW, Welcome to WI.

Been given warnings for tint in my Shelby. Got pulled over for no front plate on my Dakota (well I had the plate and bracket on the pass front seat since it ripped off in a snow bank 20 min before the cop pulled me over). Tint one was by a state trooper, plate was local PD. All depends on the cops mood.

One of my racing buddies finally put a front plate on his car after being ticketed 10 times for no front plate. Didn't help that the cop who ticketed him each time lives down the road from him. Guess he wasn't impressed by my buddy's being stupid with his hemi Challenger. Damn 50+yr old hooligans. Finally put the plate on the car.

I quit tinting my car windows. Tired of the rules changing what seemed every other year.

The wife has been driving her car for 7 years with no front plate and nothing has ever been said.

Disclaimer:
She drives a'07 Avalon with stock rims and not tint. If she had a slammed Civic with spinners and painted windows things may be different.

I got a warning for no front plate in my stock ram 1500 pickup. The stupid plastic plate holder broke when I bumped into the wooden bumper plank in a parking lot. I had it in the seat beside me. Wound up bolting the plate directly to the bumper, using locknuts. Ain't working its way off.

i could care less of they dont have a front plate or if their windows are tinted...i dont pull people over for either.

my car doesnt have a front license plate and im getting my windows tinted to 15% in the spring...

depends on the cop but i wouldnt worry about it in washington county...

You are most likely to be hassled for tint and front plate by state troopers.

It depends on the cop.  I knew a guy who would enforce the front plate pretty strictly, but most won't.  Honestly, when you move up here, just get two plates when you get Wisconsin plates. I doubt anybody will say anything beforehand.   Can't help you with the tint.

i think it depends on the cop and what sort of vehicle you're driving
i used to have a big lifted pickup when i first moved to WI from Arkansas. it had dark tint and no front license place.

i got pulled over by a state trooper just outside Madison when i was going 70 while others were going 75+

she wrote me a fixit ticket for both.

i think passing LEOs on the highway is kind of like basic training, you want to blend in, don't stand out. evidently my big lifted truck stood out in the wrong way

Anyone have a pointer to the tint laws?  My car came tinted from the factory and it never occurred to me that it might be an issue.  It's not like I'm going to pull the factory glass out of the car for a fix it ticket anyways but I am curious.

Me too, back in 1991. And I concur on the best move part. 2nd day here, took my FOID and nailed it to a tree stump behind my house and "ventilated" it.

Welcome fellow Illinois expatriate! I moved up to the Dells area from Du Page Co. back in 1993 and never looked back. Regards, Gary

I'm in Washington county myself. Good area. Close to stuff to do while still being more rural. Daniel Boone is a decent private shooting club in richfield. Also one in Hartford and westbend.

Factory tint is legal. Its aftermarket where they get pissy. Although Ive never seen factory tint that would be dark enough to be illegal. Dealer installed stuff can be iffy. Only time Ive seen factory tint illegal was the vehicles we were building for export to Saudi Arabia where they dont allow tint at all on any window (at least thats how it was when I built these vehicles until 2001). Weird to,see tahoes and suburbans with clear glass all the way around.

Yeah I bought the car out of state so I never really thought about it since there were factory stickers on all the glass and no discernible film on the windows in the doors.
