Talk to me. Front range is played out, WAAAYYYY to many people. The west slope is one choice, Idaho or Utah also in the running for relocating.

I'm 29 and I love Montrose. We are starting to get much more diverse in age range, and companies are coming here and/or expanding. Are you retired, or would you need to find work?

Actually what i should have asked. How's the weather? Looks like while cold in winter milder than the front range Ft Collins area. More wet , rain than snow.
|
|
[#5]
The weather here is amazing. No where near as much snow as I would like, but even when it does, they plow the roads quickly and it takes all of 10-15 minutes to get across town. Spring and fall are really nice. June, July, and August get into the 90s with maybe a week flirting with 100. Winter will see 30s-40s for your average high, upper single digits to teens for average lows. We always get an indian summer. Snow doesn't usually start staying around until after Thanksgiving, and by late February/early March it melts off almost right away. Fairly dry overall though.

There seem to be some groovy (yes groovy) possibility's for homes, hells 1/2 acre spots in the outlying areas. Hows the options for shooting? I have more ?? but will pm you and who ever else replies. Hard to believe you're the only one in Montrose on the board. Would also like feed back from other areas out there. Already read the threads from out of staters asking about GJ & Durango. |

Commercial flights don't run 24/7. Early flight leave around 6 and later flight arrive by midnight. More airlines fly in during ski season and you can get decent rates. I am flying to Atlanta for Christmas. Direct flight from Montrose for $388. For private, I think you can fly whenever.
Most of that area by the airport is pretty nice. Some friends just bought three acres out that way. If you get too far north towards Olathe, or to the east of the airport out gets pretty dry and turns to adobe clay. But, right by the airport between flattop and the San Juan bypass is decent. There is maybe one slightly sketchy neighborhood. Kiltakaze and saigamantx both live here and are in my age range. I believe there may be a couple other members that aren't very active. Junction has several active members and Durango has a couple. I must be the only one awake... Good luck! ETA: oh yeah, shooting! Tons of BLM, and there are two membership ranges that are decent. All within 10-20 minutes of downtown. |

A few thoughts having relocated from Loveland to Fruita 6 years ago....
Weather - Montrose is a little milder than Fruita/GJ. The Grand Valley has colder winters and hotter summers than both Montrose and the front range. If it snows early in the winter, it can set up an inversion that sets in for weeks and keeps the valley much colder than surrounding areas. Summers in the valley are hot. We get less snow than the northern front range, but it stays colder. Housing - Going to be much cheaper over here right now given the boom on the front range. Great time to get out over there and into something you like over here. Traffic - Fuck the front range. No traffic whatsoever over here in comparison. Shooting - BLM all over the place. A few BLM ranges as well. If you go early, there are usually some interesting and fun folks shooting. If you go in the afternoon, you get morons that have no concept of range safety. I used to shoot at NCRGC, and miss the fact that most folks there were very safety conscious. The state (CPW) is going to be building a large shooting facility at Cameo over the next few years. The only things I miss about Loveland are access to fly fishing water in close proximity to the house, and RMNP. The rest of the front range reminds me of NJ. Feel free to PM if you have questions specific to the Grand Junction area. |

Jim,
Just another thought to consider. If you and your wife need any type of medical care you might have a drive from Montrose. They have a very nice little local hospital and if you just need regular medical care you should be ok. If either of you need a specialist you are likely looking at a 2 hour or so drive to GJ. These kids in their 20s don't really think about things like that! <---is old (apparently) at 35. But I am a nurse and soon to be nurse practitioner so I think of these things. Also, I do really like living in Fruita. However, I don't think land/houses are as good deals here as they probably are in Montrose. |

Medical care is on the list , same for a decent wholesale meat distributor where we can buy 1/4 - 1/2 sides locally, and 1/2 way decent / reliable grocery store. |

We have these folks process pork for us. A friend of ours raises the pigs, but Homestead does all the cutting. They have always done good by me. They also do beef that's raised locally.
Homestead Meat Another local ranch that does beefs. Roan Creek Loma has shitty parts, and nice parts, and they are both hot in the summer. |

Hi Jim
You should look at the Crawford/Hotchkiss area which are sleepy little towns tuck in near the West Elk Mountains on the Western Slope about 1/2 from Delta or 45 min. from Montrose. The weather is great, for some reason snow and rain storms split when they come this way and the winters are mild. I tell people "if there is snow on the ground come January 1st it's going to be a cold winter" which sometimes happens but not to often. It's all BLM and forest Service with Private ranches. We have 40 acres and I can shoot from my back door. Lots of prairie dogs and the deer and elk hunting is great with no hunting pressure. I'm 54 and the wife is 51. We just bought this place a few years ago and have a B&B just for hunting season so if your in the area PM me. |

If that big brick building wasn't there we'd be in. Knock it down, use the bricks and interior material to build 8 livable units. Big quonset huts for shops, few connex containers as outer perimeter building / security stations. Money wise unfurnished, 8 people @ $100K per could make it work.
