Nice find but I have to say the thing I've found most useful and well worth the couple of bucks is the Google app store app "Backcountry Navigator". I think it was 11 bucks, and so far its proven well worth it. I've only used it a couple of minutes up on some logging roads for testing purposes, but its looking very promising. 

Obviously it doesnt work when the battery dies, which paper maps dont suffer from. 

I use this one as it has satellite, topo, and terrain.  Then you pick the topo map you want.

1. I've printed these full sized on a large color printer.  The colors are faint, and I tried various enhancements.

2. You'll see several years to choose from for most maps.  The maps have actually LOST detail for ones published since about 2003 or so.  The reason for that is if the underlying data isn't digital they no longer include it.  This means certain old dirt roads disappear, pipelines, powerlines, trails, remote buildings, and many other things detailed into approximate location by hand aren't on the newer maps.
