I think the phrasing was blown out of proportion. TPD used as many resources (to include K9 and the Air unit with FLIR and thermals) as possible to try and locate the escapee for two hours, which is more than enough time to find a dude in the area he was supposedly seen and contained in. After two hours they called it off because if he was not found in that timeframe, he was probably already out of the area before it was contained.
As far as kicking them off of TPD property, I don't think thats the case. I wasn't there, but I can almost guarantee the "political climate" statement was referring more to not having the Officers available to dissuade protestors if they were to show up. There are not many cops on at night right now, and those that are on have an obligation to the citizens of Tucson to take calls for service. Due to the lack of Officers, they just said maybe you should have your incident command at your station, which in all reality is not much further from the hospital he escaped from than the Police station was. I can tell you first-hand, if a dude wasn't located within a given area in two hours, he's gone and setting up across town (which is where the station they requested to set up was) is not going to make a single difference. This was a matter of lack of resources.
Don't lump us into politics, we're just trying to do our job. Trust me, I have backed up USBP several times in the past and have never once heard direction not to. This whole thing was blown out of proportion by their Union.
