Is fun!

My daughters and I went and did some hiking in the Superstitions in Minow Canyon. It was tons of fun with lots of boulders to navigate through and a 130' rappel at the end. The kids did great.

Awesome! Can you give me more details on how to get to this location? My kids love to climb and rappel and since moving to Phoenix earlier this year we're not 100% on where the good areas are.

Jack Carlson and Elizabeth Stewart have written the definitive guides to hiking in the Supes.
I have both books and they contain every trail out there along with stories and tidbits on the Lost Dutchman.
Plus Jack is one hell of a nice guy.

So the canyon we went to is Minnow Canyon

but there are canyons all over the state. AZ is pretty awesome for this kind of stuff. I would suggest the links for info on canyons here

If you have climbing and rappelling gear you are 90% of the way there. With canyoneering, you need just a few more skills in addition to climbing and rappelling. It involves a one way trip through a canyon so you use the climbing and rappelling, but then you need to figure out how to get the rope back once you at the bottom of a cliff. Mostly this involves blocking off the rope at your anchor and then attaching another rope or pull cord to pull it down or rappelling on both strands of a doubled over rope. Like any type of activity where gravity is involved it is dangerous so do some research and read some books on the matter, but it is a blast and if you kids like doing climbing and rappelling already they will love it.

Here are a few good starter canyons that are pretty easy to do with kids that are close to the Valley.

Apache Canyon

Geronimo's Headdress

Salome (the Jug) (good for kids when the water is low May-June)

El Capitan

Do a search for them and you will find tons of info on them.

Have fun!
