I agree, can't wait to see this lofted barn. I have my eye on some properties near Morristown, been looking at the barn type things to retrofit a small cabin.

It was getting dark when they were done, so I'll get a final pic tomorrow morning.  70 tons of crushed basalt total went in.  Problems with the first tractor delayed the project for a couple of hours.  Now I'm just waiting for the barn to be delivered.  Hopefully next Tuesday or earlier.

What was the cost, if you don't mind? Thanks.

$3,250 for the whole job.  I was told by several people that even though crushed basalt is the best material, it is also the most expensive.  I could have not done any topping at all, but the ground is so sandy I would have had problems all the time.  The funny thing is that crushed limestone is cheaper, but the quarry is so far away that delivery charges would have made it about the same price as basalt, which is found locally.

Here's the tour of the final product.

Looking south west from the road:

Current base camp.  Everything will move to the top after the barn is set.

Looking toward the west south west:

Near the top with the barn pad off to the left:

The barn pad, looking south from the drive:

Looking north from the pad to the drive:

I love waking up to this view every day:

Looking east from the pad to base camp:

Why I needed ROCK. This is the native "soil".

ENOUGH OF THE DRIVEWAY ALREADY!    The next update will be when the barn shows up.

ETA:  The cat is freaking out.  He's never had a 75 acre litter box before.

Seriously, where did you see the cat in these pics, I gave them a few more looks.

Thanks everyone.  This is a labor of love.  Murphy is a persistent pest!

I did get a chance to a little drone work this morning.  Not only is there no cat to be seen, there aren't any other people either! Turn down the sound.  There's nothing but motor noise.

4:28 of nutt'n but dirt & scrub.  Also, the friggin drone would not shut down after landing until hit it with a rock.

1. I'm jelly. Your place is awesome. The driveway would kill me though. My jeep would get dirty the wet first ride down the driveway.

2. You let your cat out around there?  Don't plan on it making it too long. I never let my cats out.

My cat is always in a harness and on a leash when he's outside.  He's NEVER out alone.

Yup.  The drone operator gets a license and a registration number that must be displayed on each drone.  There's a new commercial drone operator's license that I don't know much about.

You are supposed to buy the parcel where the first owner already did the driveway and fencing and gates and pad...  and then pay him the base price.

Does Commifornia count?  No DX, but a lot of east coasters.  I just moved everything from the bottom of the driveway to the top so I can have a level place to sit at night out of the dust.  Now that I'm basically in my permanent location I'll string up a real antenna.

I had a major accomplishment today.  I dragged the trailer into town to empty the black water tank. What has my life come to?

You need a poo dolly. We have a similar trailer set up an bought a remote tank to empty into. How long can you run your ac with your setup?

None that I can detect, but my charge controller is PWM and not MPPT. The Morningstar TriStar 60 has a setting that changes from PWM to on/off to deal with potential noise, but I've never had to use it.  I did get noise from the pure sine wave inverter when I had the HF antenna within about ten feet of it, but moving the antenna 50' feet away dropped the noise no nearly zero.  I also have a Samlex 600 watt pure sine wave that's noisy as hell.  My modified sine wave inverters are less noisy, but some things REALLY don't like the choppy wave form.  I should mention that I'm really sensitive to RFI because I run a ham station.  If you're talking about normal appliances, you won't notice anything.

The question of PWM vs. MPPT is almost like beans or no beans.  Yes, the MPPT controller converts excess voltage from the panels to additional current to the batteries, but for a small installation the difference is not worth the extra money IMHO.  I started with three 12 volt, 100 watt panels and a 30 amp PWM charge controller from Renogy and it was great. 300 watts of panels produce A LOT of power in good sunlight.

If you're planning on running an air conditioner, it's going to take more than 300 watts and a much bigger inverter.  My air conditioner draws about 900 watts on the low cool setting.  Microwaves are also power hogs.  Mine draws 1,100 watts.

Renogy Package

The photo of the package shows a two-way combiner for the cables from the panels.  If it's accurate I don't know how they expect you to run three panels.

If you get other connectors, DO NOT get these.  Once connected it is nearly impossible to disconnect them even using the special MC4 tool.

MC4 connectors

Use these instead.  This link is a four-way, but there are three-way out there.

Easy four way

I could go on for hours about setting up a solar system.  There are that many variables. I'd be happy to share my experiences and opinions, but remember that my opinions will be worth every penny you pay for them.

Roger on the honey bucket.  I'm trying to find one locally because I HAVE NO ADDRESS for deliveries (long sad story).

I can run the air conditioner on low-cool for a few hours during the day and still have a full charge on the batteries at sundown.  It's enough to knock the edge off, but not for continuous cooling.  Once I get the rest of my panels and batteries out here, I should be good for all day operation and maybe a few hours at night.  I can run the A/C in low fan mode over night and still have battery power in the morning.  I'm running it in low-fan right now and I'm showing a total load of 90 watts.  35 watts of that is the inverter itself and a couple of wall warts charging the laptop, phone and I forget what else.

I don't remember if I posted that one of my neighbors had a tenant that defaulted and he ended up with nine, 100 watt panels that he doesn't want.  He said that I can have them if I go get them.  Since they are literally across the road from me, this is a no-brainer.

I've made a minor change in the power setup.  I picked up a small Rubbermaid shed to hold the batteries, charge controller and inverter.  Before this I had to disconnect everything and put the inverter in the truck when it looked like rain.  Now I can keep running.  Once the barn shows up (if ever), all this stuff will go into it.  The generator just gets covered.

Los Shedos (or is it las shedos):

Yes, I know that I need to cover the terminals on the inverter.  I just need to find them.

I'm running 200watts on Renogy panels and have a 1500watt puresine inverter (haven't hooked it up yet) running 2 group 24 12v  batteries. When those die I'm going to 4 6v batteries. Love your post.

Nope.  I plug the trailer into the big Schneider inverter.  It is a 120/240 split phase that can deliver 3,500 watts continuous and 4,000 watts for 1/2 hour.  It's more than enough to run the trailer unless I try to use the A/C and microwave at the same time.

ETA:  Here's the inverter:

Schneider 4024

ETA:  I should have added that the trailer is wired for 30 amps, single phase, so I can use only half of the inverter's capacity -- 15 amps continuous.  The breaker box in the shed has 15 amp breakers in it.

Funny you should mention that.  I've been reading upon aquaponics and it looks really interesting.  I want something that's sustainable, not because I'm one of THEM, but because I like the idea on it's own merits.

Have you done it?  I've watched a lot of You Boob videos, but it would be great to get some insights from someone with first hand experience.

I picked up a Savage 93R17 stainless yesterday and got it out for zeroing this afternoon.  Nice little rifle! It took five shots to get sighted in and then it put five in a dime-sized group at 50 yards from a sitting position.  I have good scopes in STL, so I put a $60 top-of-the-line scope on it for fun until I get everything unpacked.

LOOK OUT PRAIRIE DOGS!  It'll be fun to stretch it out.

LOOK OUT PRAIRIE DOGS!  It'll be fun to stretch it out.

I nailed a pdog at a measured 440 yds with my 93R17.  I was pretty surprised.  Pretty surprised that it only took half a box of ammo.

The .17 is an awesome little round.

Agreed.  I have a Marlin .22 WMR, but I like this little Savage better.  It's short, light, and easy to carry around . . .not much bigger than a 10/22.  I looked up the scope I got for it and it's actually an airgun scope.  It's a Nikko Stirling MountMaster 4-12X50 AOW.  It seems to handle the magnum load pretty well.    We'll see how it holds up.

ETA:  I'm also impressed with the CCI  V-MAX armor piercing (black tip) rounds.

My Savage .17 HMR has been one of my all-time favorite rifles for years now.

As you said, sub dime sized groups at 50 yards all day with ease.

From the 100 yd MOA challenge.  I'm still at the top as far as I know.

That's because I haven't shot it yet.

ETA:  I highly recommend Patti Rabbi at Mountain Valley Realty.  She saved me a ton ($2,000) on my property.  She really knows the area and is a no BS kind of person.

ETAM:  If you IM me an e-mail or e-mail me, I'll send you the whole ranch lot map.

I've considered buying some land out that way.  What's your take on crime out there?  I've heard of hooligans out there vandalizing and stealing from unattended properties.  I'd like to build a cabin out there, but won't be able to be there full time for a number of years.

I'd love to buy something like this:

Thanks for the offer!  I'm not really at the point where I'm ready to buy, but I'll let you know when I am

Any time.  I doubt that this part of the country is going to change much in the next year, decade or century.

Well, the barn / shed FINALLY got delivered and set this morning.  It's a purdy l'il ting.  Now the work begins filling it up with all the chit I should throw away, but just can't.  My first task is to get the inverters and stuff up and running so I can have power back in the trailer again.

There is a loft area at each end.

Busy day.  I got the main inverter, charge controller, and batteries moved into the shed.  I still have a bunch of work to do, but at least I have electrons.  When I leave for STL tomorrow I'll shut the whole thing down so the batteries aren't charging while I'm gone. I need to build a battery box and get it vented to the outside and add a battery switch and fuse / breaker.  I'm out of time on this trip.

I also got the travel trailer moved back to the top of the driveway and ready to be closed up tomorrow morning.  It has been a hectic three weeks, but everything that needed to get done got done.

I NEED A VACATION!

I've been following this thread since the beginning. Thank you for taking us along in your project and for the constant updates. What you are accomplishing right now is something I aspire to do some time as well.

I have an old friend who did something similar on some property he bought in Valle. I don't recall the name of the company but he also got a small prefabricated cabin delivered to his property where he installed 12VDC solar power, toilet, propane, wood stove and other things to provide all the amenities he wanted whilst remaining off the grid.

Everything is done here that can be done until I get moved.  I've been away from the apartment way too long.  Well see if any squatters have moved in.  I should be back on Monday afternoon.

It will probably be a month or so before I will have another update.  When I get back to AZ for the final time, the serious work will begin.

EIGHT DAYS TO GO!  Packing is nearly done.  Final month's rent has been paid.  Electric and cable disconnect have been scheduled.  Truck reserved.  Box trailer is loaded.

I'm REALLY happy I had help loading the remaining batteries and ammo.  Between the two, there's 1,700 pounds of cargo.  I'll let y'all guess which had the greater weight.
