Who else is out in a stand today on this lovely frosted morning in Ohio?
Checking in from Mahoning county myself. Already saw a few doe. Using a marlin 1895gbl that's been customized. Leupold vx3 1.5-5, XS sight rail, wild west trigger and bear proof extractor/follower. All duracoated matte black. Hornady factory 325gr rounds. |

I'm down at Wayne National Forest. I saw about 10 trucks/cars parked along the road and I even came super early. Haven't seen deer yet. Heard at lease two dozen shots so far. I have a Marlin 1895GBL 45-70 w/Nikon Prostaff scope, using 325 grain Hornady Leverevolutions. Good luck and be safe this week.

Good luck everyone.
I am interested to see how many straight walled cartridge kills there are this year. I think it was almost 10% last year which is great for the first season considering many like me probably didn't already own nor have the immediate ability to buy an appropriate rifle to use. JLE |

Out here in Lake Co. I don't even have a gun, but the SO's youngest has my SKB. His first time hunting. I saw one tail in the distance. Heard lots and lots of shots but nothing too close.
Good luck and stay safe! |

It was dead quiet around here until 8'ish. We haven't seen a deer yet, we might have better luck sitting up at the range. My son is using a Marlin .44 and I'm using a Marlin SBL.
We I was a bit chilly this morning. |

Saw about 18+ deer. Mostly doe. My dad took at shot at a buck, two others that hunt with us got doe.
I could of shot a doe or two, but eh. Maybe later this week. Still got our second farm to hunt at |

Coshocton County. Quite in the area I was hunting. No deer sightings this morning. Hopefully tonight will be better

Well if nothing else, I've got some more brass to reload. My son had a heard of 10-12 come in and he got EXCITED. He had a couple tough shots through brush and trees and about 75 yrds. while they were trotting. No luck.

Well so much for his first hunt. I saw one tail, he didn't see that. We did see over a dozen turkey. Oh well. I think he wants to try bow hunting, so there's next year.

We ended up seeing one more doe but it was on the ridge to the west and I didn't want to take a shot not knowing who's in what stand on the property behind me. We saw several fox squirrel, one grey and a couple of black. This was the first year I've seen black squirrel south of Jefferson. |

No deer for me yesterday. Back to work today.
Probably going to take off Friday. Also Saturday and Sunday. I did however shoot a 50lb female coyote. |

We're out giving it another go. Overcast skies actually work better for our woods. Bright sunshine makes for too many shadows. Not much shooting going on yet.
Anyone have an idea on kill numbers? |

I shot at one yesterday. I missed. To be honest I'm still anticipating the shot before I shoot. I'm zeroed but that was at the range and I guess it different in the field. I'm out today. Less trucks parked on the side of the road this morning coming in. Saw two other hunters walk by at firing time. It started pouring rain and I saw them walk out one at a time. It stopped raining, I'm damp but not cold so I'm staying.
ETA: Walking in saw a doe and buck carcus(sp?). Shitbags took the antlers and the back straps and left the rest to rot by the side of the trail. |

I can't stand people that fucking do that. Fuck them. And people ask why I don't let them hunt on my property. Fuckers like that ARE the problem. Edit: Shooting fur is always different then paper. When I was growing up, I consistently missed deer, being nervous, just pulling the trigger, etc. Just in the last few years have I settled down and gotten used to it. All I can say is try to get over the mindset of having to shoot something. Also be picky about your shots. After doing it once, my biggest fear is wounding animals. Now, I will only take shots that I know I can make. I no longer wing slugs everywhere. |

That shit pisses me off, too, but is it even illegal? I mean, if they had tags for the deer, do they have to take the whole animal? Or is finding the animals in that condition mean that they most likely didn't have tags? |

Or is finding the animals in that condition mean that they most likely didn't have tags? I know for other state it's illegal. As embarrassing as it is to say, I'm more familiar with Colorado's rules then Ohio's. In Colorado, you have a responsibility to process the animal quote, 'as far as possible'. Fellow hunters have gotten a ticket, in Colorado for not doing so too. (Due to the meat being rotted, specifically in a bear, and the game warden didn't give a single fuck.) But secondly, people that do what you described, probably don't have tags and if they did, probably didn't tag it. |

I would have had a nice 8point yesterday morning. But as soon as he was getting into shooting position, 3 hunters decided to get to take a walk in the woods at 7:45am and ran both bucks off.

Haven't seen much moving and I haven't heard much shooting, either.

I won't be able to get out until the extended gun season (December 28th and 29th). This will be my first time going deer hunting; the excitement/anticipation level is high! I'll be using a Marlin .45-70, and hunting on some private land in Harrison county.

22,256 deer checked during gun season as of 12/1/15
State total so far, 2015 (all seasons): 111,752 State total, same time frame, 2014 (all seasons): 113,093 State total, same time frame, 2013 (all seasons): 124,290 Looks like we're going to see the number of deer harvested in 2015 stay level with 2014, if the trend continues. We're down -1.18% so far this year, which isn't much. Not like the -9% drop last year. Due to the weather being fairly decent, across the state - I'm going to expect a slight up tick come Saturday / Sunday vs. 2014. Edit: Ohio's 2015 deer herd estimate was put at 750,000+ deer. There will be an estimated 23,000-27,000 deer taken via car accidents. And we should see an estimated 175,000 deer taken via hunting this year. My own personal projection... We're going to see a million+ deer herd by 2020, if not sooner. More land is being developed by farmers (more of a food source), the suburban sprawl in major metropolitan areas is slowing down, as is the general housing market. Some cities (Youngstown / Dayton / Cleveland) are returning more former residential areas into green space, which is leading to more urban deer. And, most of all - hunting and hunters is suffering a major decrease across the board, for multiple reasons. Harder to find land to hunt on, aging hunting population, etc. |

2nd day in the stand. Saw nothing this morning. Had my neighbor kick up a herd of 8 yesterday but they were moving too fast to get a good shot.
Gonna stay in the stand until dusk and try again tomorrow. Had 4 does on Saturday come by just before light and I couldn't identify them well enough to shoot with my bow. Just trying to shoot for meat right now and then try for a buck with the bow.. |

Neighbor took a couple shots at something around 11:00 this morning. Not sure if he got anything. We didn't go out this morning since my guys had to get caught up on some school work (we home school). We are heading out in about an hour, hopefully they move around this afternoon/evening.

Saw nothing yesterday and nothing so far today. Heard only 4 shots which is low. Did spy a new tree for a bigger and better homemade stand next year. I will put a roof and walls on that one.
Also I am just hunting over an old meadow but will start to develop a food plot in the spring. My hopes are fading for taking one with a gun but I still have a bow and I have a lot to learn. |

Yesterday we went out at 2pm since we had to do some schooling. We saw a doe and two yearlings, they were to far to shoot though.
We will head out this afternoon as well. Hopefully the snow will get them moving and make them easier to see. With the wind/leaves we haven't had much luck hearing them. |
