The last place I actually shot in the desert was in the Cargo Muchacho mountains. That is another hour of driving past the place I linked above. It is not far from the AZ border. You have to drive through El Centro and the dunes. The dunes are neat to see, and the Cargo Muchacho mountains was a rich mining area, so you have to watch out for mine shafts. It was also part of the area Patton's army trained in prior to the north Africa campaign in WW2; as a kid in the '70s I found 5 practice rifle grenades there.
If you just want to shoot there is no need to go that far, but it is a fun place to visit and I like the trip. So throwing it out there as another option.
Imperial Valley also has a nice rifle range. I used to compete there, they had pull down targets with a max range of 800 yards. They also had plans for expanding the range, I haven't been there for about 10 years so I don't know the current condition.
