Hey guys, looking to get out somewhere secluded where I can legally do some shooting. Any recommendations? I'm in Vista, so there should be something within ~2 hours I'd guess. I have a 4x4 so if the terrain is rough, that's not a problem.

East of the gypsum mine by Anza Borrego.  Off split mountain road.

You will have company though.

I've camped out at Anza Borrego before, I was expecting this recommendation. Get's pretty busy, or just a couple people? What if I went during the week?

ETA- is it ok to just find any safe place to shoot out there or is there like designated areas?

I went once, was somewhat busy on a 90* weekend, plenty of room left.

Only legal to shoot on the BLM land that is not wilderness.  Get a map or an app.

I bet weekdays are quiet.  But watch for the train!

Cool, thanks. I have a map, so that should make it easy. Appreciate the help!

Make sure you aren't in the Park.  Weapons, let alone shooting are illegal in the park.  That said, unless you provide a reason, why should anybody know you have weapons in your vehicles or campsite.

I suspect that 75%+ campsites in the park have guns.

Google Steel Peak, it's BLM land.
Should be open, they have fire restriction during summer and fall.

It was my goto place before moving to AZ

Steele peak is closed I think.  Not secluded either.

Howdy neighbor.

From what I gather there is not too many really good legal outdoor shooting areas anywhere near us.
I wind up hauling all the way out to Joshua Tree as I know damn well that the area I am shooting in is 100% legal.

Lots of overlap, having to cross over into the state park, outdated maps (and law enforcement more then happy to clarify with handcuffs) in the San Diego and Imperial county areas.

Where at in J-tree? I wouldn't be opposed to driving out there.

I take the I-8 out and down the grade into the low desert. Shooting all over around there.

One easy spot that doesn't require 4x4 is to take I-8 and then the 98 exit. In a short distance there is a dirt road that you can take about a mile and ends up between the hills. It's a good place to shoot.

This is where I go (south of the 98):

https://www.bing.com/maps?&ty=18&q=Ocotillo&satid=id.sid%3a202ad016-0e39-5cb4-be75-b1c12f49981f&vdpid=5073556871005077505&mb=32.758488~-116.051376~32.724857~-115.951942&ppois=32.7393798828125_-115.994178771973_Ocotillo_~&cp=32.73938~-115.994179&v=2&sV=1&adlt=strict

But there are lots of other places in that area.

I also know some areas that are a bit farther off the road that provide more privacy.

If you go too far north of I-8 you will be in areas where they don't always permit shooting.

The last place I actually shot in the desert was in the Cargo Muchacho mountains. That is another hour of driving past the place I linked above. It is not far from the AZ border. You have to drive through El Centro and the dunes. The dunes are neat to see, and the Cargo Muchacho mountains was a rich mining area, so you have to watch out for mine shafts. It was also part of the area Patton's army trained in prior to the north Africa campaign in WW2; as a kid in the '70s I found 5 practice rifle grenades there.

If you just want to shoot there is no need to go that far, but it is a fun place to visit and I like the trip. So throwing it out there as another option.

Imperial Valley also has a nice rifle range. I used to compete there, they had pull down targets with a max range of 800 yards. They also had plans for expanding the range, I haven't been there for about 10 years so I don't know the current condition. http://www.ivrpa.club/

As of 2/18/17 Steel Peak is definitely closed.

BLM rangers have been at the entrance the last two weekends for hours informing people that shooting is no longer allowed.

Is there anywhere to get BLM maps without having to order online or take a trip to a BLM office?  San Bernardino County used to have BLM maps for it online in PDF form, but it seems that it is no longer the case.  Not sure what's out there for other counties.

Yes, buy an app, but I do not trust them 100%.

Backcountry Navigator has an add-on overlay, OnX has a premium version.

There are free online BLM overlays but they are inconsistent and cumbersome IME.

San Bernardino County has a map for shooting areas, BLM maps are sometimes hard to find on the internet and boundaries are sometimes not real discernible.

Google geocommunicator. You can pull up maps with BLM overlays. Great for finding secret spots.

Hmm, I wonder if there's an app available for Blackberry.

Again, thanks guys. I found that spot DonS was talking about off the dirt road by the 8 and 98.

What kind of distances could you shoot out there?

You know I didn't really look that close as I only brought pistols. I think 100m would be pretty easy, maybe a bit further though you might be shooting over a dirt road. There was NOBODY out there on a Tuesday, so shooting over the road would probably be fine.
