I emailed a LGS about Transfer/DROS of a rifle from out of state.  They said $100 for import fees...per rifle...and $25 DROS.  I can live with the DROS fee, but has anyone ever heard of the import fee??  This is for a couple of AKs from Atlantic Firearms.

Time to find another FFL.
Sounds like they want to hit you with extra charges on stuff that is not in their inventory. Gotta make a buck off someone.

Transfer fees for guns like that are universal, though $100 is pretty high. My local shop is $54.

It costs the shop time to deal with the gun, and since they are not the ones selling it (in which case they have a margin between wholesale and street price to keep them in business) the transfer fee is the only way for them to make any money off the transaction. While the $100 is high (though unfortunately the norm in CA), the fee itself is a sound business practice. Usually shops prefer you buy from them, and an abnormally high transfer fee is their way of making that known without arbitrarily refusing to provide transfer services.

Find a better shop, my local LGS is $60 for transfers, DROS included.

Isn't there some sort of DOJ paperwork required for out of State sellers to sell/transfer guns into California?  This is why many don't want to sell to California.

Fairfield Pawn was $45 for a transfer, including DROS, last time I used them about a year and a half ago.

Yes there is and its called a CFLC. Its free but another layer of stupid.

#5I am an FFL located outside of California. I ship/transfer firearms to California FFLs. Am I affected by the California Firearms Licensee Check (CFLC) Program?
Yes. You must obtain a Firearms Shipment Approval number from DOJ prior to shipping a firearm to a California FFL. You will need to enroll in the CFLC program to obtain Firearms Shipment Approval numbers.
