Being a former Calif resident I know how screwed up the laws are there. That said, I haven't lived there for at least 10 years. I currently live in AZ, I have a CCW and carry every day, I will be traveling through Calif on my way to Oregon (another non reciprocal state). If I put my unloaded handgun in a locked box, and keep the ammo in a separate location am I legal?

From the sticky thread at top of Forum.

General Guidelines for Transporting Firearms in California

HANDGUNS

California Penal Code section 12025 does not prevent a citizen of the United States over 18 years of age who is not within any of the classes excepted from firearm possession and who resides or is temporarily in California from transporting by motor vehicle any pistol, revolver, or other firearm capable of being concealed upon the person if the firearm is unloaded and in a locked container.

The term "locked container" means a secure container which is fully enclosed and locked by a padlock, key lock, combination lock, or similar locking device. This includes the trunk of a motor vehicle, but does not include the utility or glove compartment. For more information, refer to California Penal Code Section 12026.1.

The ammo can be in the same container as long as it isn't in the gun.

Yes; however, there is no requirement to keep the ammunition in a separate container. It can not be in the chamber of the firearm, or loaded into a magazine inside the magazine well of the firearm.

That said, make sure any large capacity magazines you bring in are ones which you obtained lawfully, and possessed within the borders of the state of California before Jan 1, 2000. If they've been obtained since then, you may not bring them in.
