AND let's not forget the Spanish Flu , immediately following, which killed more people.

life was a much less dependable proposition just a couple of generations ago.

If you go to small towns and villages in New Zealand and Australia, they have monuments to the ANZAC casualties, similar to the Civil War monuments in small towns here.  Except the casualty lists are significantly larger in NA and AUS.  And you look around and you realize that almost the entire generation was eliminated, and you wonder how the villages survived.  I expect it is the same in Canada and the UK.    Makes you realize why "Remembrance Day" and the Poppies have much more significance than "Armistice Day/Veterans Day" does here
