Oh happy happy day!
U.S. House votes to stop funding California high-speed rail The Republican-controlled U.S. House of Representatives passed legislation Tuesday to stop federal funding for high-speed rail in California.
The action is largely ceremonial, however, as the California High-Speed Rail Authority has not requested additional federal funding this year above the stimulus grants the agency is already spending. That said, a rebuke by withdrawing additional federal money by the House certainly hurts the project’s future funding prospects. View Quote This is very good news. The federal money will go to other states, no doubt to be wasted there, but the tax payer(s) of California will not be on the hook for the other 90% or so this boondoggle would have cost us. More |

You know, I was thinking about this the other day. If they had put this fucker on the coast, running from SD up to SF, then over to sacto, with a side track into the central SJ valley, and built it through an honest contractor with realistic costs, and actual high speed rail speeds, it would be really nice to have.
Of course, not a single thing above was ever going to happen, but it sure would be nice if I could ride a fucking train to Disneyland, at 120MPH with my family and not have to deal with LA shithole traffic. or to SF, or to SD... As it stands, its the mother of clusterfucks and I am definitely against it... |

I like the idea of HSR as a viable alternative to air travel between SF & LA. But that doesn't mean I think it's practical to build & operate in today's political/economic/environmental climate of California.

The cost to be paid by California's residents just went UP by 10%.

How about a high-speed rail from Victorville to Las Vegas?
Done right the rails could be laid on near empty land. The San Diego trolley does good money. I understand it actually makes a profit! I'd love to see light rail connecting the Inland Empire to Disneyland, Angeles Stadium of Whatever, Hollywood ... and even down to San Diego to link with the trolley. |

View Quote If they had followed the plan as originally proposed, they might have met the speed and time requirements, and at a much more reasonable price. But even then, I doubt that it would generate the traffic to come close to paying for operating itself alone, not anywhere close to operations and construction. The fed money wasn't going to happen anyway, this just made sure that it was gone. |

Why would I want to take a train to SoCal when a flight on Southwest can be had for as little as $59?

Plus, you have go through TSA and deal with all that bullshit. Even a short flight kills most of the day. For example, the cheapest fair I could just find on expedia for a flight from SFO to LAX, during the week booked a month out was $142/person each way BEFORE all the shitty fees you have to pay. Thats not cheap. Planes are stupid expensive. |

The thing is, don't wait till the last minute to book a flight. You always pay more if you are close to the departure date. |

Hell... can we just get a light rail running from ANYWHERE to LAX?!? WTF! I can pretty much drive to SF Bay Area in the time it takes to get to LAX, go through TSA, arrive at SJO/SFO and rent a car.

The HSR is a huge boondoogle at best. Amtrack is a bust and HSR will be too.
Here is a snip from a recent article from the CATO institue: Since 1972 Amtrak has received more than $13 billion of federal subsidies. Twenty-five years later, Amtrak appears no closer to financial independence than the day taxpayer assistance began. Worse, Amtrak has no apparent plan to become self-sufficient. In fact, it is now pressing for a half-cent of the federal gasoline tax in order to have a permanent umbilical cord to the federal treasury. That hardly seems fair, since people who pay the gasoline tax — that is, people who drive their cars — aren’t using Amtrak. View Quote HSR will be no better, period. |

I dont want Kern County becoming a suburb of LA/Fresno/Bay Area either. Back in 2003-2005 time frame our cost of living was low enough that in combination with low gas prices people from LA figured it was worth the commute. Once gas prices went nuts it helped to rid us of LA trash. When the rediculous lending practices were fixed our local area went back to being reasonable again. Billion dollar train is a waste. This state needs to build it on two things. Water retention be it it dams or whatever and prisons. Largest quality of life improvement that could be made is actually putting criminals away. The stupidity of over crowding has caused it to be a golden age for thieves and cretins. |

Guys, ease up. We are all in the same state fighting the same fight.
No need for name calling. Two months ago, we took our first Amtrak ride up to Seattle... My kids were excited... their first cab ride.... their first train ride... Their first time watching two men getting arrested and taken off the train in Paso Robles.... Yeah, that was fun Two guys actually got drunk and had a fist fight in the lounge car... WTH? |

For the time frame I reference, by and large, what came up here from LA was trash. You dont like it? Tough shit. I dont get bent out of whack when people dump on Bakersfield/Kern Co. In fact I am quite alright with the fact that people dont like our air, dont like the summer heat, dont like that there is nothing to do here. Keeps them away and I flatly prefer dairy cows and shit flies to suburbanite city dwellars who bring their votes with them. The gas crunch and housing correction helped drive a shit load of their type back to where they truly belong. |

Guess we need to check our privlege and accept the "diversity train" with open hearts. If people get upset with us not wanting daily deliveries of society's not-so finest, I will take the butt hurt over the trash. /edit Out of fairness, Kern has its own trash as well. Its just that I dont need more of it much less a diversified type of trash be it liberal voting hipsters, employed yet in debt up to their eyeballs average folks, or actual criminal element. Anyone who views the train as a means of a daily commute, i dont want. |

If I were to want to goto the bay area or LA, i am taking my car or flying. The train is simply stupid.
