The wife and I are heading to Fort Myers in October for a week or so.

Besides floating in salt water, what else is a "must-do" type of activity?  I know we are going to drive to the Everglades for a day, she wants to see some gators.

Also, we both like food, so any input on non-chain type restaurants would be cool.

Thanks!

Check out what's known as the entertainment area.  It has a good amount of the non-chain places.  also there are a good amount of local brewers showing up if you like lager types of beer.  If you like beaches then you have Fort Myers beach, Bonita Beach and several in Naples......30-45 minutes away.  There's also the Edison-Ford museum to.

Ft myers beach is more the type of place you go when you're looking to get shitfaced and into a fight.

A lot of people like going to that fraud Edison's winter home. Good tourist attraction.

We got a few ranges, a few malls, and good fishing.

Sanibel Island is a big attraction. They got some great cafes out there with some other stuff to do.

One thing I keep meaning to do is hit up the new trampoline park called sky zone

Those things are badass and a great workout.

bookelia cap con's get the pie

this is the view

corckscrew swamp if if you like boardwalks through swamps, naples zoo is cool

also If you are looking for a great evening many of the charter boats will take a group/pair out for a restaurant bar tour you'll go to bars that can only be gotten to by boat or have dock access then they drop you off near/at your hotel so no driving is needed.

there is also suppose to be a smaller but good tarpon run in October.

If you make it to the beach the wife and I always go to Nervous Nellies a couple times while we are down there(its right beside the bridge coming over from the mainland) if your looking for a place to stay a night or two on the beach we stay at the Harbor House right across from Nellies, very clean, modern rooms with a minimum of noise.

So would most but there is a big price difference. Not to mention that will be in the middle of the season, where prices get so retarded the Holiday Inn charges like $400/night.

Places like south seas/sundial/moorings/tortuga get up to $1k/ night.

Sun Harvest is my favorite place. Strawberry/OJ is the best. Edison Ford is a cool place to visit.

I don't drive on the island as much as you ( ), so I'm not 100% sure - but don't think season really starts to pick up until after Thanksgiving.  I bet you can find plenty of places for a reasonable price.  Heck, 90% of the houses in my neighborhood are still empty.  I'm sure I could get the info for the one across the canal with a deep water dock that seems to rent out by the day (completely in violation of Sanibel's 28 day minimum, but none of my business).  You could rent a boat for a few hundred bucks and have a great time....

True but mid October is pretty close. It won't be nearly as bad as December through February but there's usually a noticeable uptick in traffic and people.

Season isn't nearly as crazy as it was right after Charlie so there's that.

A friend of my wifes hooked us up with one of the condos they own for 60 bucks a night.

Right off of Hancock Bridge Pkwy, by Palm Avenue.

I really appreciate all the recommendation thus far.  I've been writing them out on a spreadsheet and noting how far they are from where we are staying.

Thanks!

I live in Cleveland, I cant imagine it's as bad as here, but I will indeed stay aware of my surroundings.

I appreciate the warning!

How are places around there with concealed carry anyway?  I certainly intend to carry wherever legally allowed.

North fort is generally fine. It has its bad areas like anywhere else. Just stay away from the Estates.

Now if you're gonna be on Hancock... Check out the gold miner down the road. You may walk away with a new toy.

Keep your doors locked at all times.  We've had a lot of problems with groups of teens "car hopping" (pulling on door handles to find unlocked cars) along that Hancock Bridge Parkway corridor.

Stay clear of the hotels / motels near where you're staying as well.  Most of them rent to the locals and the only reason most locals get rooms there is to engage in drug or prostitution activity.  A lot of those same people like to patronize the 7-11 at Beau and Hancock Bridge Parkway too.

No issues that I know of with carrying concealed anywhere around there.  Occasionally you might see a business with a sign up but the sign has no legal standing.  Concealed means concealed.  Worst the business can do is ask you to leave and have a trespass warning issued against you if an LEO is around.

You're an hour south of Myakka River State Park which is a really cool place to see. Lots of wildlife, cool canopy walk, can go out on the lake, and gives off a "We're in the jungle honey!" type feel.

There's a pretty cool casino in Immokalee (one hour east) if you like gambling. The dealers are girls in skimpy outfits plus they have a few tables which accommodate free drinks. I hadn't been to a casino in years ( so maybe that's why I enjoyed myself so much) and had a friggin' blast on my last trip. Plus it helped that I won money Good Hold'em action there too. Just gotta be patient until the super-aggressive players sit down and then trap them. Most of the regulars playing there were pretty good.

I've been to the Corkscrew Swamp sanctuary that someone else mentioned and it was just OK. We did visit in the summertime and it was hotter than hell. Didn't see much wildlife at all (if any). Maybe visiting in the fall will be a better experience. The sanctuary is on the way to the casino so you could make a day out of hitting both attractions.

Just got back home tonight.  Had a great time down there even with the possible ebola exposure (same plane, different flight) ugh

Visited the following places

Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary
Shell Factory (great nature park there)
Three Fisherman (awesome food!)
Ron Jon's
Naples Harley
Ft. Myers Harley
The Gold Miner
a few random gun stores
Sanibel Island (Tarpon Beach, Ding Darling, Traders Cafe)
Sun Harvest Citrus (YUM!)
Dales Dockside & Tiki Bar (meh)
Coral Springs ( a beach and "The Boathouse" restaurant)
El Patio Restaurant (Peruvian food, so good, get the purple corn drink!)
Immokalee Casino (tripled my money, turned 1 dollar into 3)
Log Cabin BBQ in Labelle (So good!)

I know there were other places, those are the ones I remember.

I appreciate all the ideas you guys offered up!  Hopefully I didnt give anyone down there Ebola!
