I am looking to get some more magazines for my MP-5.
Do any of the non-OEM magazines work or should I pay the premium and stick with German?

HK Parts Net. I bought theses which are authentic German made ones at sixty dollars before SH, the price went up to a hundred during the panic, now it's back down.

I suspect that HKparts.net is about to close.
Any other vendors you can suggest?

Don't know if you consider $70 good or not.

If you own an actual MP5 then spending the scratch on OEM HK mags shouldn't be too big a deal for you.
Having said that, stick with the HK mags. I've never had a problem with HK OMG mags (one of my issued long guns is an HK MP5A3 and I've never seen one of our issued OEM magazines fail). |

The $18 Korean ATI mags from RTG work perfectly in my MP5. Zero malfunctions in over a thousand rounds since I bought it a few months ago.

I have 6 OEM mags for it and they are getting somewhat beat up and starting to show signs of rust so I wanted more mags. I bought some more many years ago but I don't know what happened to them. Below is a video of my wife shooting it. I have the A3 stock too but prefer using the A2. I have a Gemtech Raptor on the gun but I'm not using subsonic ammo. Also, keep in mind that it isn't sighted in for that distance and the target is pretty small so I don't think she did too bad. |

Do you only shoot German ammo through an MP5? If I need to feel anal about shooting German mags in an MP5 I'll bust out the SD marked mags, but as long as I've never had an issue with the ATI mags I'll continue to use them. YMMV

I have never had issue with the POF mags.
For a while there, they were as cheap as the ATI/Korean mags. |

I was issued 10 of the HK mags with my MP5 FR3 and between those and all of the others issued them , I haven't heard of any issues in over 10 years ( I'm an FI as well) other than one spring getting weak. (Range mag). The only maintenance done is to wipe down with an oily rag (or eauvilant ) as part of monthly maintenance. |

I was not about to trust my life (or a hostages) life to to a CRAP magazine that might or might not feed the 115 gr. CorBon ammo we used for serious use. Your Korean crap might work on the range with ball ammo but you don't cut costs when someone's life is on the line! We wouldn't even use the POF magazines. |

I have a slew of POF mags that run flawlessly. They're "cheap" at RTG Parts too.

Buy the best mags you can afford and that are available to you. If availability allowed me to buy only HK new mags, I would. Over the years, during periods of less than ideal supply of HK mags, I have purchased Korean ones, MKE polymer and metal, POF, and factory HK. After years and thousands of rounds, I have found that the POF and MKE are on equal ground with HK, with the POFs actually a little nicer than the MKE. The MKE polymer mags are great if your magwell is in spec. If it is slightly out of spec, then they require some fitting. The Korean ATI, Victory, KCI, (whatever name they are using) etc. are OK, but the springs are both short and a little weaker than "licensed" pattern and HK mags. If you have them, replace the springs with HK springs and the reliability goes way up.
If you can buy HK mags, then do so. If not, get POF. |

Sort of off topic here, but as for HKparts.net, since it was ran by Adam himself, if I were to order a new part for one of my HKs, would it not get shipped or is someone else running the site now?

shooting a Toad clone, I find most of the aftermarket mags, even the one Toad mag that came with the gun, usually work fine with 115gr ammo. Its when you start introducing flat nose 147gr or hollow points is when issues might surface.
Don't have these issues with the German curved mags. |

Contrary to others' experiences, I do get occasional feeding issues with the ATI korean imported curved 30s, but have never had a problem with HK straight or curved 30s. I have about 20 of the ATI 30s on hand for backups when I do rentals on the MP5, but I'll only resort to them if I've been too busy to reload the HK mags between customers. YMMV |

Just an update.
I bought a number of magazines, including OEM german and non-german. So Saturday I go out to the range to try the mags out. I get off 2 shots from the first mag (non-german) and I have a failure to extract, resulting in a double feed. In close to 20 years, this gun has never had a problem or a jam so I give the german mag a try. I get off 1 shot and another failure to extract and a double feed. I look in the ejection port and the extractor spring looks weird. I take the gun apart and the extractor spring gave out. Time to order a new one or two. At least the day wasn't a total loss. I had a NIB M11A1 siting around for 15 years, that I recently picked up a Lage MAX-31A mk2 upper for, and decided it was time for it to relinquish it's NIB status. Here is a video with 70 round drum dump (after testing it with a drum with 2 rounds then a drum with 5 rounds, to make sure the gun worked ok and didn't run away). |

The MKE polymer mags also work well: http://www.hkspecialiststore.com/product_detail.php?Category=26&Page_Number=&Index_Seq=634&Home_Page=Index. Some guys have problems with out of spec mag wells, but they run great in all mine.
My friend's SW9 had some issues (also issues with HK factory mags fitting too tight and scraping the finish off), but the problem was a slightly concave (about 1.5mm) magwell where the front weld joined the flat. A little work with a auto body tools and it was nice and straight. |

The spring, the feed lips, the body? I meant to say that I have two Korean mags, I put about 100 rounds through each. The issue with Korean (KCI, Victory, ATI, etc.) is that the springs are far too short and a little soft. They fail at around 400-500 rounds by not feeding the last two rounds, then by 1000 rounds they double feed or don't feed at all. if you replace the springs with HK springs and they work fine. But then you're into the same cost as POF mags that work great and are reliable out of the box. I have one KCI mag that has around 5000+ rounds through it after replacing the spring and it is still fine. I only use it as a training mag, but it is functional. If they are $9 or $7, like Botach and CDNN did for a while, I would buy some more just to have them and turn a profit when Hillary 2016 starts ramping up. At $20+ it is a false economy over $24 for MKE and $27 (if you buy 8 or more) for POF. Another issue with Korean mags is that some of them have a very heavy finish, where oil and a scotch brite pad takes care of that pretty quickly. I have had HK MP5 pattern stuff for many, many years, and have a ton of factory mags bought back in the 80's and early 90's, and have been fortunate enough to get a few from some agencies where friends work when they got out of the MP5 platform. For new mags, at this point, I buy POF mags and MKE polymer for new ones and keep rebuilding my old HK mags. It is hard to justify $70 for a new HK mag when the POFs are perfect and the MKEs work fine; and the factory HK mags used to cost $20 way back when. I have found that with frangible ammo, the MKEs work a little better than anything else as they feed the odd truncated cone profile a little more reliably due to the shape of the little "feed ramp" on the front of them. I have never had feed lip problems with any mags since I am always firing brass cased ammo and never steel case, which reportedly wears hard on the feed lips. I reload and have reloaded for years, so steel case has never had any attraction for 9mm, and mags also get rotated regularly to minimize individual wear. If your mag catch spring is nice and firm (it is a wear item that you should replace periodically), you don't get the carrier rubbing on the feed lips with any ferocity. |

I was planning on doing a comparison video between factory mags, a Toad clone mag, an ATI mag and a POF mag.
My ATI mag clearly has a sub-par spring. When disassembling it the floor plate somehow managed to rotate and slide down the mag body, bending the spring a little bit on the process. I think that floorplate has some out of specs dimensions for sure. The POF mags are much closer to HK factory mags, but all of the mags I received have floorplates that must be coaxed back into position. They do not slide freely to the bottom of the mag to lock the tabs in place. If it's not properly locked in the bottom, the mag doesn't hold 30 rounds. It's super expensive these days to "only buy German" and get a good mag stash going. I think the POF mags are fine, but mine don't seem to be as good as factory mags. For half the price of OEM mags, I can learn to live with the quirks, but they're definitely not the same. |

More Korean Mags for me!
Also, my offer to pay shipping to take those shitty Korean mags off of people's hands still stands |

I took 0000 steel wool and CLP, and rubbed the outside of the clone mags (parked) smooth, mostly just for aesthetics, but it really got the CLP in there. I did the inside also as best I could, but then ran rags through, trying to remove as much CLP from there as possible. I don't know if that affected my mags' reliability, but I'm sure it didn't hurt. I've honestly had no problems. This includes full-auto.

I got seven H&K mags for my Vector MP-5 SBR; I had to send it back to Vector because the mags would not lock I to mag well. The gun works great now, no problems with OEM mags. I heard a lot of good things about the MKE mags, especially since they are built using H&K tooling. Mixed results on the ATI Korean Mags.
