Can't decide which to get 16 or 18 inch fal. What do you guys think? I can only get one.

18in, fixed stock.  If you like it, then go with the 16in PARA.

16 usually only works good with a short gas system

I am going with the 18 inch model.

I think 18 is the sweet spot for FAL's.  16 is fine though

I like 17.2" (436mm).  Belgian Para length.  About the shortest that will work right.

I would go 18", personally. The FAL doesn't seem to really like being much shorter.

A hair under 17.17", actually.  436mm is the specified Belgian contract length.  458mm (18.03") is the more common Para length for FNs and I believe is also what the Argies used for their shorter barrels.  IMBEL uses 440mm (17.32").

Probably gonna have a different company put on so the barrel will have to be cut a rethreaded.

I went with 18" one mine.

I wanted to take full advantage of .308 rounds, which are usually loaded for 20+ inch barrels.

As other's have said, the 16" versions seems to be used with the shorty gas systems, and I liked the look of the longer system and handguards.

I just put the bayonet on my FAL with the "super short" (17") barrel (that's what they called that barrel length, while 18" was "short"), and came to the realization that 436mm is about the shortest you can have the barrel be and still use both the bayonet and the barrel-mounted sling swivel on a bipod cut barrel.  The rear of the bayonet socket is probably no more than a millimetre, if that, from the groove for the sling swivel.

I have a couple year old DSA 16 inch long gas para that runs fine. I can even adjust the gas on it some. I was looking for a 18 at the time, but the deal was too good. I'm happy with it.

I r disappoint.

I saw the thread title in Active Topics on mobile, so no idea what forum it was posted in, and immediately thought...

Oooo...Iowa vs Yamato

Btw, I've always wanted an 18" FAL.

Thanks.  Factory Imbel para barrel that came from a rifle cut up in the ME.  Some parts salvaged from that rifle, with a DSA receiver, surplus hand guards, etc, put together by CMP Armory in Dallas, NC.

one of my favorites

It's a toss up on which I feel looks better: 18" or 21". Nice rifle, Pitbull.

I've got an STG58 21", the 18" Para, and a 16" carbine with Izzy light barrel furniture.   Love em all...

I've always been a big fan of 18" barrels on fighting rifles, both for 7.62x51mm and 5.56x45mm. With 7.62x51mm the ballistics performance isn't affected nearly as bad as 5.56mm when you go with a shorter barrel, but in both cases I feel 18" offers the best overall balance of compactness, accuracy, and ballistic performance. That, and it makes for a very attractive rifle profile, not that looks really matter on a fighting weapon. I've got an 18.5" barrel on my LRB Mk14 MOD 0 build and I'll be mounting an 18" 5R stainless barrel on my LMT MWS308 later this year. The same thing goes for FALs. The 18" "Congo Style" FAL with the side folding stock will always be my favorite FAL, and I think one of the sexist fighting rifles in history.

ETA: I've had reliability issues with 16 and rifle length gas.   I hear of no complaints and better accuracy from folks at the range with 18s.  (good mags are an assumption)
