The area over the blast chamber is going to be a little thicker, 1.480" OD probably out of paranoia, and then the area over the baffle stack will be 1.450" Hope that clarifies AP got it. Your drawing was clear...I knew exactly what you were saying. I did my Apogee tubes in between the threads. They look somewhat similar to a Ti-Rant. Yours are going to step down just past the threads, then step down again after the blast chamber, then back up at the other threads. There many cans that step down after the blast chamber (my Sakers and YHM LT all do), but none of them ramp back up at the end. And all of those have some type of millwork in the thicker area, like grips/grooves/dimples/whatever you want to call them. Granted...probably look a lot better when finished a darker color instead of raw SS or Ti. |

Gotcha. So you're saying it may not be terribly asethitically pleasing.
Now I'm trackin' I posted this in the $250 F1 thread because it will get professional engraving and cerakote in addition to other creature comforts |

Well that then begs the question of if it's necessary to have a thicker area over the blast baffle... |

I would leave it thicker around the blast chamber, but I would NOT take it back to full thickness around the threads at the far end. I would take it to the 1.450" after the blast chamber and leave it narrow through the end. There is very little pressure remaining at the far end (relatively speaking). Going larger diameter around the far threads isn't necessary. I think it would look cleaner with the smaller diameter carried through.

I'm not drunk enough to comprehend that one... Basically I think what he is saying is that the baffle stack is having pressure applied to it towards the exit from the muzzle blast(basically the stack is trying to be pushed out of the end of the can) and having reduced threads at the end cap may cause problems with longevity. IE thread deformation/separation from the wall being too thin at the threads. |

Just don't want people to get the impression that the end thickness doesn't matter. Just be generous when doing these mods. Although, odds are, that it will be safe as long as your endcap on the barrel end is strong. Worst case, it will just shoot out the end and make a good endcap/freeze plug launcher. Seems fairly safe for the most part. |

I used a 4" angle grinder with a used blade. Took all of 3 seconds to do and the cutting wheel has a natural round edge and width to make the notch in my VSR's so it looks like it was done with a end mill which I don't have access to. Not a direct help for you but if you know a guy or have access to a angle grinder for a couple of minutes it's a pretty quick job. For the notches in my cones I used a 1/4" round metal file, the FP's are soft enough it doesn't take very long to do those either and it's fairly easy to keep the notch straight.

I'm trying to decide between building a Form 1 6" 556 Ti can or jumping on the $299 Trek deal. I think the costs would be comparable, but the weight savings may push me to build my own.

Heh, ditto. I printed out my information and then taped it to the tube then just used the engraver to get rid of the letters on the paper. It came out about as well as you can expect a hand held engraver to do. $8 as a one time fee versus multiple $45 (cheapest I could source locally) engraving costs was full of win for me.

Thanks, I'm in the queue for some and it's nice seeing what I'm waiting on. Not sweating it, weeks to go before the stamps come back.

If i wanted it to be pretty and neat I would've just bought a commercial can. I still plan on buying one eventually but for now this suits my needs perfectly. |

Everyone is free to do as they please but I will say, Even the cheapest SDTA builds from the outside still look nice. Why make it look like crap with a hand done job when I am going to have it for the rest of my life? |

Why make it look like crap with a hand done job when I am going to have it for the rest of my life? Because instead of paying an extra $50 for an engraving that's now going to my next can. Again, if you want a nice can with a professional engraving why make a freeze plug or VR suppressor? That is just nonsense IMO. I'm all for a good looking engraving and things done professionally... when I buy an $900 Saker 7.62 with baffles that will last a lifetime. |

Engraving can cost as little as $25, it's not like it's doubling the cost of these form 1 builds. To think spending a few extra dollars on nicer engraving negates the effects of building a freeze plug suppressor and makes it nonsense is pretty asinine. |

To each their own I guess. I don't see the point. If i was never going to buy a commercial can and this was it and I wanted to make it as nice as possible then I can see it I guess. For me, it's pointless.

Any of you guys have a DM price list for their products? I should have approved stamps here in about a week, and I want to start ordering parts. SDTA's out of stock on all the Ti tubes I want.
Of course I'm also tossing around the idea of buying a mini mill and mini lathe now too....which averaged out across 5 suppressors with tooling and what not would start me out at the $250+ mark before I even get the raw materials |

I wouldn't say it's nonsense when one can build a $350 titanium Form 1 can that works just as well as a $1000 commercial can. You can have cheap and nice in the same Form 1 package. At the end of the day, I'm really not worried about saving $22 by doing the engraving with a harbor freight engraver |

End caps are about the only thing with a static price. Everything else.. email him and tell him what you want, and he gives you the price. |

I don't understand the $30 savings on bice engraving either. Especially when your $300 can sounds better than your $1000 can.

My form 1 can on page 1 of this thread out performs my factory GemTech Quicksand which is a $1200+ suppressor. If you want to consider your Form 1 as a "temporary" solution that is fine, but most of us in this thread DO NOT. We are striving for the best, and not looking at pinching pennies. There is another thread for building form 1 suppressors as cheaply as possible. It should be easy to find....its about 170 pages now. |

I don't plan on having my can engraved professionally, it's not that I'm cheap, it's the matter of me making a can that I did all the work. For me it's a self pride and accomplishment.
I do plan on stamping my tube. That way when someone asks about it, I can brag how I made the entire suppressor. It's all personal preference, some members like a professional look, others like the home build look. Anyway, back to the thread topic. According to forum talk times of ATF approvals, I'm about 10 days away from approval. I was playing around with the MP35n bar material for the blast baffle. Just facing off the end of the bar, I'm gonna have to flood the shit out of the carbide insert for my cuts. If this MP35n gets to be a bitch to turn on the lathe, I've got a bar or Inconel 718 on stand-by. I'm still collecting Titanium bar from ebay, just need a couple more scrap cuts for cheap. |
