My first rifle. Last generation, of the old style mini-14s.  Ordered it new. The gun store actually had to look around for it a bit, back in '05.

choate, F/S flash suppressor combo.
XS ghost ring sight.
Chopped, pinned and welded at 16.1
butler creek folder, painted brown with rattle can, and clear coat.

Here's mine:

Hoping to do a retro build with it, but losing an auction for a wood handguard today make me wonder if that'll ever happen...

That is win. Wish they still made that rifle. Was only around a few years IIRC. Guess there just wasn't enough sales or something.

Long time lurker, first time post. I don't have an AR based rifle yet (one day I hope). I do have a few Ruger Mini-14's and other Ruger's though. This is the first one I bought back in 1987. Its been a very reliable rifle. And has had a few different makeovers since I bought it. This is its latest.

Choate PG stock
Full set of Wolff springs
Heavy gas block top strap front sight
Mo-Rod Blind Reaper muzzle break
Magpul AFG2
Picatinny rail's at the 9, 3 and 6 spots
Specter 3-Point sling
Accu-Strut SOCOM barrel stabilizer
Vintage Thermold magazine in the mage well

The only thing left to do is a Tech-Sight rear sight.

Finally got myself a Mini Thirty.  Put about 60 rounds thru it today, had 2 FTF's with Tula ammo, and only 1 time, the round wasn't properly fed by the promag 10 round magazine.  I bought the rifle in PA, and couldn't take the two 20's with it, so I had to find something to use with it.  FUAC, FUNY.
Anyhoo, the sights were spot-on at 100yd from the factory.  Here's a few pics of it propped against my house...

I really like the thing.  Depending on what happens in NY, it may wear the factory stock for a while, but I'd really like to put some kinda pistol grip stock on it.

ETA:  The FTF's were loaded again, and they fired.  Good primer strikes the first time around, probably just the cheap Tula ammo having issues.

I bought one of those rails for my Mini, and I ended up ditching it too.  Even though it appears to be low profile, optics sit higher than I'd like them to.

Got my first mini 14 Thanks to forum member (joekizanyu)
It's a 182 series from 1981.
I really like the look of the classic wood stock, but prefer the tight fit of the Hogue OM.
(I kept the wood, in case I want to switch it back)
Added Socom accu strut, canvas sling, MOE rails at the 9 and 6 o'clock for my TLR-1 and optional Bipod.
Uncle mikes QD sling swivel as the Hogue only came with the stud.
I still need to mount a mag pouch for the stock
and undecided whether to install scope or not.

It's an Ultimak mount. You're right that you can't use the irons with it on, but I have it mounted with Leupold quick-release rings for that very reason.

I removed the rubber butt-pad (just two screws) and I drilled out the hole that held the rear sling swivel, using a rat-tail file I fit a A2 sling swivel from a AR-15 butt-stock.
I then I drilled out the back of the mini ranch stock and use a lower bolt from an M-14 butt-stock to hold the rear AR-15 sling swivel in place, replacing the lower wood screw that was on the Ruger stock.

http://i302.photobucket.com/albums/nn115/wjtwining/P5110198.jpg

The front sling swivel I removed the "Loop" from a German 98K swivel mount, after I re-sized the hole in the gas block on the mini (don't drill to deep) it fit right in.
Drilling the gas block on the mini was very hard, the rifle is stainless steel.

First and still my favorite gun.  I've sunk way too much money into this puppy!

581 series Mini 14 Tactical
Clyde Armory SCAR Stock
Ergo F93 and Grip
Socom Accustrut
Mo Reaper
Magpul Hand stop
Aimpoint PRO in an American Defense QD Mount
Cerakoted Burnt Bronze and Graphite Black
Not Pictured-Magpul QD Sling

I've ordered a Sage EBR Mod 0 butt stock that I'm going to modify to fit this stock.  Gotta complete the Mini EBR look!  I'll cerakote that to match and then she'll finally be finished. (I've said that about 8 times now!)

That's one of the best looking renditions of a MIni with that stock I have seen.  Not familiar with the Sage butt stock, but the design of the F93 makes it look right at home on there.

eta: Googled it - yeah, that's a neat butt stock too.

Thank you.  I'm very proud of it.  The Sage Mod 0 buttstock is made for the full size M14 EBR stock.  The SCAR is just a scaled down version of that stock for the Mini.  I'll have to modify it to fit but I don't mind, I need the cheek riser anyway.  If that doesn't work out, I'm thinking about switching out the F93 with a MFT Minimalist stock.  Lighter weight but has all the features I need, plus it looks closer to the Mod 0 stock.

Yes, it has.  Though this thing was plenty accurate out of the box.  Changing the front sight to the Mo Reaper made me more accurate (narrower front post, plus the hooded front sight matches up perfectly with the rear sight).  The Accustrut helped slightly as well.  The SCAR is very tight fitting, it essentially beds the stock when you install it.  I haven't measured groups or anything but I shoot very accurately with this rifle.

Its been great!  with some mods..
the factory synthetic stock is loosey goosey, so i glass bedded.  This has been the most important feature as far as accuracy.

Ammo.  Shoots Tula pretty reliably, on occasion there is a light primer strike.  I stock up on silver and gold bear, and it has been flawless.  I get 1.5-3 moa.. I have  tried Winchester brass with no noticeable improvement over S/G Bear.  I see no point reloading 7.62x39 if I did in fact reload.  pushing 150 in something thats designed for 125.. the arc is bad enough.

I did a trigger job.  I suggest gundoc for this.  BIG improvement.
I had a 1.75-5x32 scope for a while but found it really isnt necessary for the ballistic characteristics and my location (central FL), went with a red dot.
The strut is pure aluminum and is unnecessary with this newer thick barrel, but it absolutely sucks the heat out.   I think it does help accuracy, but that might be all in my head.
I also went through some of the action points with a dremel felt wheel and some Flitz.  Thing is a clock.
I simply love it.  No complaints.

Posted mine earlier in the thread; this isn't mine but it belongs to a family member:

That's a 180 with a heavily modifed factory stock, and holes drilled in the factory wood handguard.  For the record, he did this back in the 80's when there was no aftermarket support.

Somebody at PU pointed out it looks kind of like an M14E2...

I really like this setup and how it looks!  Do you mind listing what all you have added to the Mini?  Also, I love the stock!  Is that just a Ruger Stock that has been Cerakoted?  How did you add the bottom rail section?

just the ruger stock painted with brownells aluma hyde 2 OD. Great stuff.
I glass bedded the stock with brownells accu glass gel.  This is a must on the ruger factory syn.  Helps accuracy tremendously.
Its been a long time since i bought the strut.  some one was making them in pure aluminum with clamps that fit the full size barrel.  Ill try to hunt him down. Not really a vital add on.
A2 buttstock sling adapter and the forearm adapter is from isreali weapons.  The sling is an MS3 clone that i got taken on, but ebay gave me a full refund. It was for my AR but i was able to get the real deal after i got my cash back.  Honestly the clone isnt bad at all, so why not use it on the mini?  FREE SLING! ha!
I did the trigger job. 4.5 lbs pull. nice and smooth.
Primary arms red dot with warne QD ring.
Bottom rail:  Its a Magpul 7 slot.  Just drill the holes and mount!  easy.
I didnt like how high the rail sits, so i dremmeled out a bit of the stock so i could sink the rail a bit.  I epoxied it in there as not to loose stock ruggedness.

Wait.. didnt i already say all this stuff a few post up?

So I found my way out of the AR15 board and discovered that we have a Ruger board, I have been missing out.  I present to you my Mini 14, I have lots of ARs but this thing is my favorite plinking rifle by far, it will eat anything I feed it and never stops no matter how dirty it is.
It is a 581 series that started life with an ATI Strikeforce stock on it, I did not like how it balanced in the hand so off it came and was replaced with a Hogue stock.  The Hogue is great, the balance is perfect and it seems much more accurate.  I can pop pine cones on the ground at 50 yards pretty easily.  Sometime I put a Bushnell Dusk to Dawn 3-9 on it but most of the time the irons are all I use.  I have added a SOCOM AccuStrut and a quick magazine release, both were great investments.
