I have a 8.2" 300blk upper, 12" rail, running a hybrid can. I haven't chrono'd it but I know I don't have as good of a kill rate on hogs as my 10.2" blk upper with the same loads and I think the barrel would be better for a honey badger type build.

So here I am looking for something more lethal and versatile. 2350fps with a 123gr is apparently doable with about a 12.5" barrel. Thinking about lilja and going back to a 1-6 optic. Would still be fairly short and have a lot more useful range than blk or 6.8 spc.

I have a 12" Grendel.  Running a Steiner 1-4 on it.  Love it.

i really love the cheap 100gr wolf Ammo.  Would like to see how it performs on hogs

Relevant ballistics chart to back this up?

I'm not saying SBR's fall on their face because the barrel is shorter, I built a 10.5" 5.56 for deer hunting. Puts out 1,000 foot pounds out to 80m on paper. What I have questions about is a smaller diameter base bullet being able to absorb more energy than a larger one. The trend - generally - is that the larger the caliber the better the power out the barrel given the same lengths. That's why the .300BO does as well as it can.

Might give 9mm x 39 a look. And I wouldn't throw away any of the SOCOMs from a 12". Barrel length is an issue but apples to apples, the larger bullet does better in most cases. It's very much obvious necking out the same cartridge.

Going the other way, no, it's why 6.5 needed a 20" when 6.8 was tuned for 14.5" from day one. Now, "just because I want one" is your choice, but if its really based on actual power delivered then look up the charts to see. Anyone can build whatever, but even a .308 is going to be more than competitive. And yes, there are some of those SBR's out there, too. Along with .458 SOCOM SBRs.

Whatever, be careful what you ask for.

http://www.warriortalk.com/showthread.php?133949-Tell-Me-I-m-Crazy-The-6-5-Grendel-Pistol

I get 2300 with a 110 vmax almost popping primers or 2100 with a 125 nosler bt or 120 tac tx from my 10.2" noveske blk.

Yes the Grendel does have 2.3" more barrel here but I'm willing to make that trade off. Even if I got identical velocity for the same weight bullet the 6.5 is always going to have a better bc and retain velocity better than .308.

6.8 I'm not really looking at. Grendel is a new caliber but I already load 123 6.5 bullets for my creedmoor ar so it's an easier extra caliber to pick up.

I went ahead and ordered the 12.875" Grendel barrel from Lilja and a couple boxes of 123 sst and 123 eldm Hornady rounds to try out. Remembering that I already have an extra .750 slr gas block laying around pushed me over the edge.

Velocity figures are 10 shot averages recorded on an Oehler 35P placed 12 feet from the muzzle 1,030 feet above Sea Level at an ambient temperature of 30 degrees F.

*Note the low temps with the 12.5 inch gun

Nothing else out there will have the same retained energy as a 123gr with a BC in .5 region, or a 129gr ABLR with a .553 G1 BC and 1300fps expansion threshold.

11.5" Grendel has more energy at 400yds than a 20" .30-30 with a 150gr does at 200yds.

10.5" Grendel has more energy from muzzle on out than a 20" 5.56 NATO.

I will be building one as soon as Faxon sends my barrel from the group buy on 65F.  One of these days.... I have the SBR lower ready and a bunch of the upper parts too.

Stuck the barrel in today and fired a few rounds to get the gas block adjusted. 2275 with Hornady black 123eld. Only thing is I forgot to swap out the h3 buffer for a standard. Maybe I can close the gas block another click or two.

I have a 12.5 but haven't had a chance to shoot it.

Gonna be this year's deer gun.

I'm considering ditching my 11.5" 6.8 spc and getting either a 11-12" 6.5g or something similar. Haven't decided yet but I've killed quite a few pigs and deer with the 6.8, I just want to try something different, possibly a wildcat that shoots a 6.5 bullet out of an ar platform.

What bullets are you guys using that expand down to 1600-2000 fps? I reload so I'll definatley be in for some high bc target bullets as well as a good hunting bullet. I haven't looked but I don't think Barnes makes a tipped 6.5 bullet that is in the 115-125 range.

Hornady 123 sst and nosler accubond lr seem to be popular for expansion. Idk about any of the Barnes

What sort of accuracy are guys running 12.5s getting out past 200? Grendel is a pretty accompished beast but I wasn't sure what the lost velocity will do to accuracy loads.

At 500yds I can consistently hit a steel B2 silhouette with a 3x optic.

Haven't shot it at 200 yards yet, have the steel targets just have to set them up and get some rds. down range.

Loving my Grendel experiment so far.

Got a rough zero on a cardboard box at 100 yesterday. Cleaned the barrel and then squeezed these off at 420yds 5-10mph 3 o'clock wind shooting off the back of the 4 wheeler. 22" plate. With the adjustable gas block there is less recoil than my 5.56 guns that don't have one.
