I've been thinking about selling a NIB FDE Mk18 RIS. I'd like to fund some NVGs.

Anyone regret selling theirs?  Hard to replace but a Geissele Mk8 would be the likely substitute if I felt the need for another 10.5 to go with the CQBR Block 1ish SBR I have.

Odds are it would wear a Green horseshoe Ta33 if I keep it.

Thoughts?

I did when I got out of the clone game. Replaced with a Geissele Mk 4 I got a deal on. No regrets

Replaced with G MK4. No regrets. Good weight savings.

I have a RIS II on my Block 2-ish duty/patrol rifle and quite frankly I'm tired of the weight. I'm definitely not going to sell it because I read/heard they won't be offering them as a standalone product anymore. It's a solid rail but I'm not a fan of the weight. In 2017 I'll be looking for an alternative rail. I'm liking the Bootleg Inc picmod rail.

No way CQBR for life. Don't sell, they are too hard to replace.

I've got it listed.  If it sells, it sells.  If not, I guess I was just meant to keep it!

These two rifles meet most of my 5.56 needs.  I'm pretty much scrapping all future build plans and may sell some other rifles.  I'm to the point that I'd rather have a couple of rifles and night vision/IR lasers that a bunch of rifles in a safe.

Love the paint jobs on those suckers.

What type of spray paint did you use?

Thanks!

It's just whatever was at Walmart and an old mesh laundry bag.

RIS II sold by the way.  I guess I wasn't meant to keep it!

Sold my RIS II for quite a profit (the clone guys all want them) and got myself a MK8. Its a much lighter and handier set up now, especially with a CTR stock.

Heavy as fu*k.  With the can on, even heavier.  Honestly, I shoot my others more.

But...not sure I will ever part with it

I take the can off to demonstrate to others what short, short barrels are really like. I have dissuaded many after the first few fireballs are loosed, and the concussion hits them.

It's a cool toy.  If you can afford to keep it, keep it.

Could you post a pic of the MK8 rail with the suppressor attached? Just curious how close the suppressor comes to the MK8 compared to the RIS II. I was thinking about swapping out the RIS II rail on my MK18 for a MK8 just like you did. Would still keep the RIS II though, just because.

I haven't sold my MK18 RIS II and don't think I ever will (since they're a pain to get). However, I've wanted to do another build of essentially the same thing with a Geissele MK4 (instead of the MK8 since I'm a fan of the KAC URX 3.1's) in DDC; I've seen pics like below from google and always thought they looked sick. I don't know that you'd really regret selling it if you go with something quality like Geissele.

Thanks for the pics! It appears that the MK8 has just the slightest bit more clearance looking at my Socom mounted on my MK18 but still minimal.

Sold my Block II CQBR that I spent YEARS building last week.  Don't regret it.  It's a fun rifle, the build is fun, but honestly its heavy and I have no need for a quad rail setup.

Spent the money to build a nice 11.5" upper with a KAC URX 4, Aimpoint T1.  Even going so far as to have my tan SOCOM556 can recoated black by surefire for $80 bucks.  New upper is lighter and more built to my needs.

As far as NVG, best thing I've purchased.  Sold an Elcan to fund a PVS-14, then a SU-231 marked optic to help fund the 2nd, then a pistol to help convert those into a Mod3.  I'd rather have a good dual NOD setup and one rifle than many rifles.

Oh man I'm glad I'm not the only one with this dilemma.  MK 18's have cool factor but they are heavy.  I've been debating swapping out the fde ris II and throwing it up for sale and slapping a DDC Mk4 on it instead from the new MK18 sitting on my desk.  Looking through this thread I think has me convinced to do it.  I'll probably switch the gas block to an adjustable while I am at it.

I sold my RISII and replaced it with an SLR 9.7" handguard. Couldn't be happier because of the weight savings. Also, my specwar K interfaces nicely sight the handguard, maybe a 1/8" gap

I've got a whole DD Mk18 upper and it's one of the smoothest running ARs I have. Not changing anything. I have a "matching" 300BO that is sporting a fortis rail at the moment. May switch it out for a geissel I have in the box. Or, I may build another SBR...

I do appreciate a factory MK18 upper look but I like my new setup. Geissele MK8 for DD RIS II. Magpul SL-K for SOPMOD. Gemtech GMT-556QM for GA 5 Mod 3 (getting Cerakoted) All about the new redistributed balance and 13 ounce of weight shaved off.

The evolution....eotech and pistol grip

I wish DD would make a ~9.5" version of their DDM4 rail which is super light for a railed forearm.

DDM4 10.0" = 11oz
Geissele MK8 9.5" = 8.4oz
SLR ION LITE 9.7" = 8.8oz

I know, every oz matters but I'm not going to loose any sleep over ~2.5oz's and I'm not worried about cloning anything but I would like to stick with a 4 rail forearm for my 5.56 SBR. I also do like the look of little to no gap between the forend and suppressor.

I agree. The DDM4 has an excellent slim profile and is very lightweight for a quad rail but it's just a hair too short for a 10.3"/10.5" barrel. I never had a MK18 RIS II but I did have a M4 for a while. The rail is bad ass but the weight and wider dimensions made me look elsewhere. I really like the Geissele MK4 9.5 right now.

And prices are ridiculous on them right now.

Y'all are killing me! I'm having problems deciding the same thing. After building an 8.5" .300 BO and a 7.5" pistol with a lighter rail, the MK18 feels like carrying a boat anchor around. What to do, what to do...

This is a big part of the problem with changing your mounting system. When you go from 1913 to MLOK, you'll need to either buy additional bolt on 1913 segments -- so why did you switch to mlok? -- which will add bulk and weight, or find a whole new set of accessories, mounts, or adapters to make your familiar setup work. Until you figure that out, it won't feel right and you might be unhappy with the change.

Example: I love the haley thorntail scout mount. I haven't found an mlok mount that works as well. Arisaka's is adequate, it lets my light attach to the mlok slots, but even on the last slot it doesn't push the light out far enough, forcing me to unhappily mount my foregrip (also arisaka, another compromise until bcm makes mlok vfgs) 1 1/2 slots back from where I want it to be.

As unsatisfied as I am with my current accessories, I have no desire to return to the RIS or 1913.
