I just watched a video from Iraq Veteran 8888 about a 22LR SBR,  in the video he said that he throw the upper on a SBRed lower he had. My question is this: when you fill out the paper work for a SBR you have to tell them the the cal. The 5.56 SBR I have, I filled it out that the cal was 5.56. I'm about to send out paper work work for a 22LR SBR and on that I stated the cal. is 22LR. Do I not need to put 22 LR as 22 LR and 5.56 are pretty much the same cal.? It would be nice to have the option to run 5.56 or 22LR on the same lower LEGALY

So essentially if I fill out my paperwork to have a 10.5 inch 5.56 barreled AR and I stick a 4.5 inch 22lr barrel on it, said gun would be legal? Not saying I don't believe you just clarifying so I don't go to prison

ATF tech branch already addressed that issue, someone will probably come along and  post the letter.

in a nutshell, you have to put in the caliber, barrel length etc... of the firearm you are "making", ie. 5.56,  10 inch etc,,, but can switch out the upper to a different caliber and barrel length temporary to something else. but it has to be configured back to what the form says when you're done

if you want to do a permanent change to the length and caliber, then you would have to notify NFA of that change by mail. so they can update the registry

Form1 is how you built it. Change it to whatever caliber and length you want.
They REQUEST you notify them of permanent changes.

Stag_8_24, just notice that  your location says NJ. if that is correct ,  then you can't own a SBR in that state. unless the law was drastically changed that I am not aware of

That's what I was thinking. I have a lower that was registered as 556 with a 7.5 barrel. I ended up never building a 7.5 upper instead I built a 12.5. Sold the 12.5, now the lower sits in  the safe. I'm going to be making it a 5.5 9mm for xmas.

It'll be interesting when  I send in some 5320.20's and claim the sbr as a 9mm with a 5.5 barrel. We will see if they kick it back or not.

After thinking about it, I may just include a letter stating the change from 556 7.5" to 9mm 5.5" with the 5320.20. Seems like that would kill 2 birds with one stone.

BTW.

5.56mm is metric for .22 caliber.

A .223 and a .22 are the same caliber.

I have quite a few Form 1s with multi calibers in the box. They used to allow multiple caliber designations and I would cram as many as possible in the box. Most of mine say ".22, 5.56, 6.8, .223 and 9mm". 300 BLK was not around then.  They stopped that practice a few years ago.
