Thinking of getting a second 5.56 BCM upper and as often as I see these threads, still wanted to start my own.....trying to decide between the 11.5 ELW and the 12.5 standard, both have 10" KMR.

Currently have 11.5 BHF with adj gas block that is 100% suppressed and a 12" larue w/adj gas block and higher mag scope that is 100% suppressed.

Am wanting this new upper as one that would not be run suppressed and not having to bother with installing adj GB.

Any benefit with going 12.5 standard over ELW 11.5? Would have RDS on top.

My hesitation so far with 12.5 is I am not that far from a 14.5 pin/welded upper at that point and this upper would just be used plinking paper 50Y and in. However is muzzle blast etc is reduce or the 12.5 will perhaps run any better than the 11.5 then I am open to idea.

Thanks

I can't not say you should get a 10.5" for a red dot

But if you must go longer 11.5

I have a bunch of 10.5's so Imma say 10.5. Also one of my 10.5's (noveske) doesn't have an adjustable gas block and runs 100%. My seekins does have one but I never adjusted it (both suppressed and unsuppressed) and my sig 556 has an emergency mode which I never use. So yea, 10.5 is fine. My 12 is cool too, but just prefer the 10.5

if the muzzle blast form a 10.5 wasn't so annoying and if the velocity loss wasn't so great, i'd have a 10.5 still.

i never noticed much difference between the 10.5 and a 12.5 in handling and the 12.5 benefits out weighed the 2 inches of barrel. unless you are door kicking or hopping in and out of a car all day, the 12.5 is a nice length.

you are right though, the 12.5 SBR is really close to pinned 14.5.

Yeah just holes in paper targets at the range and would likely use in a class as opposed to my 16 length. I know I am splitting hairs here.

i used a levang linear comp on my 10.5. it seemed to help a little bit. i do like the shorties for going camping though, they take up less room in the truck.

My 11.5 runs like a raped ape. You may have to dial in the spring/buffer combo if you aren't going adjustable. BCM did a whole article on why they use 11.5" (minimum) barrels with 5.56, I just can't find the link.

ETA: Here it is. There was actually a whole write up but that link is dead.
