So my Warthog lower didn't have a ton of room so I opted for the "under the trigger guard" and the engraver said I don't need the caliber cause its on the barrel, which is will be but its under the rail, etc.

Whats the word on this?

Most don't engrave the caliber unless it is not anywhere on the barrel. If it's relatively easy to see the engraving on the barrel then I wouldn't engrave it on the lower.

Between me and my brother we probably have 13 sbr's and never had to engrave the lower with the caliber. Most already have it and the ones that don't are marked on the barrel

BUT I know its a gray area with "being visible" hence why some people don't engrave inside the magwell, etc.

SO, if I had a barrel that was engraved but it had a rail on it (which is obviously will), wouldn't that be hidden, to an extent, putting me in a semi gray area?

Appreciate all the people that check in here and on all the other million "engraving posts" about what they have done but I have never seen anyone actually have to show it to an ATF employee which is what I want to know I am covered if I have to

Only time I've ever done it is on my .45 SBR which had no engraving anywhere beforehand, and I turned the barrel from a blank.

I've only had the trust name, city and state when I've had it engraved.

Even under a rail, if the caliber is visible without disassembly you're gtg

By engraving, casting, stamping (impressing), or otherwise conspicuously placing or causing to be engraved...

Key word "conspicuously."

I think your gtg if you can see it.

The engraving doesn't bother me so i have it on all mine just in case. (all my 10.5" are under the hand guards)
It's just not worth the remote possibility of hassle IMO

This.

Didn't cost any extra to have "CAL - 5.56" engraved and it looks good, IMO.

I had 300 blk engraved on a new build because it said 5.56.  Otherwise I would have left it.  Besides it didnt cost any more.

That is the way I look at it also - it's just easier to get it engraved and not worry.

This is what Veritas Machining did on mine...

On the second one I sent them, i had it marked Cal - 300.  They are great folks to deal with!

Take care,
Bob S.
