I have finally decided to take the plunge and get an SBR upper for my AR. Currently I have a DoubleStar lower with a trigger job and a DPMS upper with a 14.5" barrel. I don't want to spend a fortune for the new SBR upper. I found a DPMS upper at 10.5" which serves my purposes for about $550. Are there other uppers at won't cost me more than $500-$600? I want to also avoid having the gas blow back in my face each time the rifle cycles. Please let me know what your sudjestions are.

A 10.5" SBR upper with a CHF 1:7 twist barrel for a little over $400. Gas blowback on an SBR really shouldn't be a concern. Only thing I have noticed gas blowback with is when using a suppressor.

As an aside, you do have a tax stamp for your lower, right?

Not yet. I am going to apply for it soon and register the lower so I can go buy this.

Gotcha. If you'd like a little advice, I'd get yourself a trust and use the online e-form process to submit your Form 1. I did two a few months ago and got them both back approved in 31 days. Definitely beats the old days of waiting upwards of 6 months to get approval.

Either way, I don't think you can go wrong with the PSA upper I posted. I have one and also have a friend who has one and they both have been trouble free.

You realize without a Trust and the ability to efile that it will take upwards of 6 months to get your stamp right?

That's what I did. Ended up paying about $250 for a local lawyer who specializes in NFA stuff along with a host of other things to draw it up for me.

You can find them from reputable lawyers online for less. It's the only way to go IMO.

For blowback to the face just use RTV silicon between the CH and the back of the upper.

Dittos. Mine has been flawless. No noticeable blowback unless suppressed.

Get a trust, make a PDF copy, then follow BigWaylon's step-by-step guide below to eFile it (filing online is free):

The toughest part is choosing your gun parts. By the time you make your choices on parts and get a lower engraved, you'll already have a stamp - roughly 30 days!

Or... you can paper file, also for free, and get your stamp back sometime between 2019 and 2025.
