Visit the MK18 thread.  Might as well just hand over all your cash right off the bat.  It's all downhill from there

He is right. It is not going to be cheap. I did my first SBR as a Mk18 CQBR clone. It takes time and money to do any Mk18 right. You can build less expensive SBRs if you just want something simple. Something like a flat-top upper with a 11.5" barrel with a standard A2 FSB, a basic M4 type lower assembly, a BUIS of some sort, and a decent red dot optic. If you shop wisely and take your time looking, you could probably build a decent SBR for around $800-$1000. If you want to build a really nice Mk18 clone (there are various versions ), you need to have a budget of at least $2K. I have a little more than that is my Mk18 CQBR. Also, remember there is the extra $200 and the application for the tax stamp. Without a trust, it is taking around 9 months for processing. Go ahead and secure you a decent lower receiver assembly and get the application started. Get the lower sent out for SBR engraving and spend the time resourcing the rest of the build.

Here is the Mk18

And here is the current SBR I am waiting on the tax stamp for. This is a Model XM607 clone.

1. Don't go under 10.3"

2. Avoid full length quad rails (unless you are building a clone).

3. Spend the good money on the barrel, BCG, and lower (seeing how you will be basically married to the lower for the rest of your life).

4. Consider an adjustable gas block. Most SBR length barrels are severely over-gassed (in order to stay reliable with cheap ammo). Being able to tune down to your load has a profound effect on recoil/wear and tear).

5. Consider steeper angle grip offerings.

6. Non magnified red dots work really well on SBRs

7. Start doing your homework on suppressors.

Of course someone will be along shortly to tell you the exact opposite but mark my words, you will eventually conform to these 7 PFran Principles...

Here are some of mine:

What are we supposed to be seeing, besides the fake happy pin engraving over the selector?

I'm currently building a SBR in .300blk

I would go with the SLR gas block.

A billet lower from a reputable company.

If the billet uses screws instead of shit roll pins thats a plus too.

Also get a charging handle that deals with gas.  The gas buster or the Armageddon tactical one.

I started with a mk18 clone last year. Then a 300 black. Now I'm waiting on a form 4 for a 11.5. I could have saved $400 and swapped uppers but that's not as fun.

Pic of pending 11.5

A couple questions for you.  First, I'm curious why you say go no shorter than 10.3"?  Are you referring to 5.56 only?

Second, why advise against full length quad rails?

The rest of your list seems sound, but because I'm planning on making a change to my existing SBR (in 300 BLK) and figuring what I want to do for my second SBR, I wanted a little more info about your first two suggestions.  Thanks.

300 BLK is good to go down to around 8". 5.56 loses much of it's damage capabilities shorter than 10".

Full length quad rails - maybe the weight?

The only way you can own one here is to have a FFL

ETA: looks like a billet lower and upper 7.5" with Flaming pig muzzle device...not really any of the advice that's been given here, lol...but the heart wants what the heart wants.

Looks great to me! I would've thought the barrel was longer than 7.5" had you not said anything. I may do a 12.5". Just thoughts right now. Nothing has been put into stone yet.
