Hey guys.

I am looking into a budget bolt action rifle with a scope that shoots about 1 MOA.

I was thinking Savage Scout and then a SS scope, but wanted opinions of everyone here.

What is the best deal going in .308 right now.

Stevens 200 in .308 can be had right around 300$ and you can upgrade them as you grow since they share the same parts with the Savages. The first upgrade I'd do is toss the crappy synthetic stock for a B&C, Manners ect....

Whats your budget? Do you plan to do any upgrades in the future or is this a once time purchase "budget rifle"?

400-600 for starting rifle. Cheaper if I can.

I would not mind upgrading as I go. Infact that is the point.

If I can do the work myself that would be awesome (Stock changes, minor work, etc.)

Rem 700 SPS Tatical in .308 can be had for that price range. If you shop about. I got a nice as new in the box used one for $500.

Start off as this

Std. 20in Rem SPS tatical in .308 With a Primary arms 4x-16x scope with TPS rings I got off the EE.

As time and money came avalible. I then hit the EE and picked up a used H/S stock.

Midway had a great deal on the Bushnell 4200 Seres
3x12x44 30mm ill mil-dot FFP
KRG bolt knob. Do it yourself less than $35 shipped. Extened mag $20 and One pc. extended Weaver rail $35 at midway.

Now the final configeration. I did some horse tradeing and got a great deal on a AI 2.0 stock this last week.

Best group so far approx 1/2 in at 100 yards with Fed. 168 gr match. Spend the money on a good rifle. The Rem 700 can be had for your buget. Than add stuff as you can afford. Check out the EE here for good deals on optics ( Were you should put the most money). But over a period of time you can buld your dream rifle. Good luck

Slim. Most aftermarket stuff will be expensive. They are good rifles though.

I suggest buying some sort of rem700. Plenty of cheap and used parts to be had.

I got the 700 Varmint ADL from Dick's Sporting Goods and made a few changes. It came with a functional scope for about 500 plus tax, which got me out to the range while I saved for upgrades. They also had a 50 dollar mail in rebate on it. It's been a good foundation to build off. It's been converted to BDL in the crappy cell phone pic below. The barrel is 26", for now, but the plan is to cut back to about 22" when I get around to picking up a can.

I have Stevens 200 with Redfield Revolution. About $480 into it all together. Another $100 for reloading. 1 MOA no problem. 10 shot.

The Stevens (Savage) 200 is a nice, cheap rifle. Since it's a Savage, you can also do ALL of your own gunsmithing, including barrel changes. Aftermarket support is flush with cool goodies to upgrade as you go.

i'd consider the howa 1500 for a really good precision weapon. while they fit the 'budget' role they are big on features and quality, and low on cost. the only actions i like better are the M70s and all others are custom actions... truly good stuff...
