We might be able to work something out. :D I currently have my 6.5x47L barrel on it. In a little while I'll have another badger action, so I should have that ready rock with the tight bore.

I have 3,000 rounds of 168s and room in my IM box. Pick a day and I will supply all the ammunition, yours and mine.

I hate topics like this, I usually end up spending more money based on what I see! Nice sticks gentlemen.

AI / Rem 700 / .308

Accuracy International Stock
Stock Remington 700 SPS Tactical with 20" Barrel
Nightforce 5.5-22x56 in Burris XTR Xtreme Tactical Rings on a Seekins Precision 20 Minute Base

Not your "traditional precision rifle", but I will also throw this one in, DPMS SASS .308

PRS Buttstock & Ergo Target Grip
Stock DPMS SASS with 18" Barrel
Nightforce 5.5-22x56 in ARMS Rings ("Piggyback" Aimpoint Micro)

I recently shot both of the rifles at the Snipers Paradise Rendezvous back in June.
http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=8&f=38&t=347037

I had no problems hitting everything from 300-1,000 with both rifles. At 1,000 yds my loads (168 HPBT with Varget) were staying supersonic and coming in at around 1,150 fps. I also shot some Factory Federal Gold Medal Match, which is basically the same as my handload, with the same results. I "lobed" some rounds at the 1,100 and 1,200 yd targets with varied results, I could get hits, but not as consistently as I could at 1,000. Obviously the round was going subsonic at that point and it was affecting accuracy.

IMHO, unless you are purely a long range bench shooter, there is no reason not to go with the shorter barrel lengths.

Why wouldn't the SASS be a "traditional precision rifle"? I'd think it would fit nicely. I've got one, I'd call it that. How do you like the piggy back set up with the micro? I would think it would sit so high it would make it hard to see. I guess it is better then nothing.

I was shooting a M-21 back in the 80's, so I have no problem calling it a "traditional precision rifle". However for many of the precision shooters, if you don't run the bolt manually, it is not a precision rifle. Of course now days you also have the M110 / Mk 11, so IMHO, bolt gun or autoloader, it doesn't matter how they operate, just how well they shoot!

My SASS will not hold the same accuracy as my bolt gun, but it is sub MOA, and it is usually within 0.25-0.50 MOA of the bolt gun, so that is good enough for me.

I have tried numerous setups for a backup red dot, piggyback on top, and angled and straight side mounts. For the piggyback like I have pictured, you go from a cheek weld to a chin weld and it works well for quick close shots center mass.

For the side mounts you roll the rifle about 20 degrees to the side, and it also works well.

I am using the piggyback on this setup because the Nightforce Scope eats up to much real estate to get a good side mount setup. They both worked good for me, IMHO just depends on your rifle setup and personal preference.

Thanks,
Capt Richardson

I know I'm alittle late to the party here but was wondering about specs on this rifle. Is it a Remington factory rifle or one with the barrel shortened? Also who threaded your barrel?
What scope and rings did you use also.

Very nice!

Not quite as short as you are asking for, 19" barrel, 40.25" OAL length with the FTE on.

Which Blue Force Gear sling is that? Padded? I'm looking for one for my SPS Tac so I can comfortably hump up and down mountains while hunting.

Model is VCAS-200-AA-CB (padded). The only problem, specific to somone of my size, is that on a bolt action the sling just barely has enough adjustment to provide tension shooting from the shoulder. If you're 150lb + or wear a pack, its not an issue. If you have never used a Vickers sling, the adjustment speed and quality will impress the hell out of you.

22" will work very well while not being very long. I wouldn't go below 20"

you can make it to 1k yards with a 18in barrel pretty easily. 20 in for sure. if stock barrel, you might want to stay upwards of 20 because from what I have seen and read they are a few fps slower than custom barrels. make sure you have the scope and rail for it. I was at the range today and just put my gun in an ai stock with a zeiss conquest scope on top. The scope was alright to pretty good distance on the other stock I had it in but in the ai, I had to use a lot of come up to get it to 200 yards. I don't know how much I would have left to get out alot farther. Won't have to worry about it to much longer when the premier gets here. RG

22" barrel. 31.5" overall. Proving to be a freaking hammer so far. Only just put my first 50 rounds thru the 308 barrel yesterday, though. But it is shooting well.

ETA- that is actually a 26" 338LM barrel with brake. I need to take a shot with the 308 barrel. Sorry about that.

It is a Desert Tactical SRS. BullPup, switchbarrel. I have the 308 and 338LM conversions. Can switch between them in about 60 seconds. They guarantee 1/2MOA and early on, that seems perfectly attainable. Kreiger barrels, so that sounds about right. Very well built.

Not yet. But you can contact Freedom Gunworks. They are making custom barrels in any caliber/configuration you want. This is a really excellent platform. I was hesitant with a bullpup, due to trigger concerns, until I fired it. The trigger is as good as any custom I have had. Excellent overall package.

In the picture above, you are seeing the 338 LM barrel with brake. It is actually 3-4" longer than the 308. The 308 barrel barely sticks out past the HG. Both barrels are threaded for a can.

What twist rate is best for a .308 in a 18 or 20" to get to 1,000?

Anyone else got any to show? I'm thinking about a Savage 10FP in .308 shortened to 18".
