I recently acquired a Springfield Armory M1 Garand from the CMP. Upon firing it for the first time, I noticed some unusual things on the spent brass.

1. There are two circular indents around the shoulder of each case.
2. There is a nick/dent slightly above the base
3. And there are also some horizontal markings just above the nicked/dented area
4. The primers seem to flush with the brass after firing, instead of being slightly recessed.

Are these issues commonly seen on brass fed through a Garand?

I wouldn't worry about the lines. There might be tooling marks on the throat of the chamber. Or the chamber is dirty. They selll a bronze chamber brush for it.
Or do I see the primers backing out. Your ok.
Shoot the rifle it can take more then you could dish out.

2. There is a nick/dent slightly above the base   (No big deal, standard mark that happens on ejection, bolt or bolt handle hits it on it's way back forward IIRC)
3. And there are also some horizontal markings just above the nicked/dented area (more rough chamber reaming I think, but not a big deal)
4. The primers seem to flush with the brass after firing, instead of being slightly recessed.  (looks normal to me)

I had a new WOA .223 barrel with the same marks on the shoulder, the reamer caused this.  Sent it back and they touched it up with a new reamer and marks were gone.  Does your M1 have a new barrel?  Maybe a good cleaning and brushing will take this out.  Try to use a dental type mirror to look and see if you can see anything in the chamber unless you have a bore scope.
