Went into Cabelas to browse and hopefully find a new orphan to bring home.  I found this nice little guy on the rack with a very fair price (IMHO) for a 38/357 Rossi 92 carbine.

It is actually an older Rossi/Interarms gun with no add-on safety.  Fairly plain oiled wood and a few scattered light dings and scratches.  Action looks good (if a little dirty) and works well and the bore is great.

The best part is the price!  It was marked at a quite reasonable $309.99, but with the coupon this weekend for "employee pricing", it came down to $263.49 plus tax for a total of $286.95!  Ah, but when you consider that I paid $200 of that with gift cards that I got for only $164, the effective out-the-door price was just $250.95!

Here it is with its brothers:  16" SS .454 Casull;  20" blue .44 Mag;  16" blue .38 Spl/.357 Mag (today's catch)

(the top two are both newer Braztech guns with the bolt-mounted safety)

Sweet deal OP. I am a big fan of lever guns as well. You might want to look at some of the available 180 grain bullets that can be used in the 357. Gives you a little more ass kicking in the terminal performance arena. Also try the Hornady Leverevolution ammo too. Stretches the trajectory out for a little more distance due to the better ballistic shape at play. Again, nice score.

Looks like one of the old 'black stock' versions.  How are the inards?  I understand that the older Rossis sometimes had poor machining, however, if it's a good one it's a decent deal.

Clearly, the action and chamber needs a good cleaning though.

I have a new Rossi 92. Love it it's my house gun and cowboy lever gun. I slicked it up using this site and it runs. I can work it as fast as a slicked up 73.

The Rossi Trapper in 357 is a very nice levergun.  Plenty of power, almost no recoil.

Shot it today and it worked great.  Took 3 types of ammo:  38 Spl LSWC, 38 Spl FMJ SWC, 357 Mag 142 TC FMJ.

The LSWC was a commercial reload that I have had forever...finally shooting that last rounds from a 500-round can.  Rifle didn't like it at all--was patterning around 4-5 inches at 25 yards!

The 38 Spl 158 gr FMJ was new manufacture from USA Ammo.  It was clearly loaded a little hotter and grouped much better--around 1.5" at 25 yards and around 2.5" at 50 yards.

The 357 ammo was even better.  I have previously found this Fiocchi 142 gr TC FMJ load to be quite accurate in other guns.  25 yards was about 1" and 2" at 50 yards.

The rifle had no trouble feeding any of the ammo.  Ejection is positive even when cycling the lever slowly.  I like that the rear sight is a standard blade and notch rather than a more traditional buckhorn or semi-buckhorn.  I'm sure the carbine can do better, but my eyes can't.  Even at 50 yards the bull is quite fuzzy to me so I do not get a precise sight picture.

Overall a fun little carbine!  My first 38/357 lever (have Rossies in 44 Mag and 454 Cas, Marlin in 45/70, Uberti '73 in 45 Colt, El Tigre '92 in 44/40 and an antique Marlin 32/20).

Yep, love those Rossi 357 mags.  I've got 2 of them, a 24" case hardened rifle and a 20" carbine, however, as you've also found out, you can't just stop with one or two, they're like potato chips.

Now I've got 8 of them. Besides the Rossis, I've got a couple of Ubertis; a '73 Rifle and '66 Yellowboy carbine in 45 Colt, a little Henry in 22lr, a Mossberg 464 in 30-30, a '49 Savage 99 in 300 Savage, and a '59 Winchester 88 in .308.  I handload for all of them save the 22lr, and both the 357 mag and 45 Colt are pretty inexpensive to shoot.  My 158grn 357 mag loads are cheaper than even bulk 22 mag is. They are all a ton of fun but I've got to say, the Rossis are my favorites as 357 mag is a great, versatile caliber.

My first Rossi.  I slicked it up using Steve's Gunz parts and DvD.  Piece of cake and now it's action and trigger are slick as snot.  12" Steel at 300 yds is a snap, 8" at 200 yds, and 6" at 100 yds.  Great plinker!  My second just because you have to have a carbine.   Slicked it up and added the saddle ring and leather.  Coupled with my SA Cav Model Cattleman, it's a great woods combo.

I have a 20 inch already, and I would have bought that one on the spot for that price if it looked good on initial inspection. Nice find for sure.

Nice catch.......that's one of the very few guns I regret selling.....

Used to shoot black powder stuffed .357 loads in mine.......was always the gun everyone wanted to shoot......
