Hello I just got a new Rossi model 92 in 357 with 20" octagon barrel. The rifle is slap full of oil, it's literally running out of it. I haven't taken it apart and cleaned it yet. Sometimes when I work the lever the hammer won't stay in the cocked position and follows the bolt when closing? It seems to happen more when the barrel is pointed up? Is there an easy fix?
Thanks

Where did you buy it?

Does the hammer work manually?  Pull it back and then push on it.  If it remains back, something is worn on your lever or your bolt.  You may have a loose screw.  Something could be keeping the lever from fully cycling.

Yes hammer works perfect manually

Only fails to stay back sometimes I was wondering if it's something to do with it being so gummed up

Like maybe a trigger spring not resetting or something

I guess all the oil could be to blame.  I find it strange it was so full of oil to begin with.  Mine just had a very light coat.  Bought it new about six years ago.

I'd be tempted to take it back, and see if you can get another one.

I wouldn't trust it, and I'd ask about the oil, too.

Well I'm in the process of putting it back together I believe it was all the gunk not letting the trigger reset reliably
I I am going to shoot it tomorrow so we will see fingers crossed

Be nice.

I called them to bitch that my Model 92 had a too tall front sight, and they sent me the correct one free of charge.

Well I think I fixed it in the wee hours this morning

On the Rossi rifleman forum they thought the trigger seat might be a hair too long to engage the hammer hook, so I took some 150 grit sandpaper (all I had) and just took off just a shade. I will need to polish everything with 1000 grit cause it's a little rough/ gritty but I figure I have worked the action 400-500 times today and not a hiccup
So hopefully that's it
On a good note it seems to feed my 38 special length semi was cutters great ( i don't have any 357 brass yet ) which seems to be a problem for some rifles

I'm glad you got it straightened out.

My 20" Rossi 92 is the last rifle I will ever get rid of.

No, .44 Magnum, so not quite as much fun to shoot as yours.

(It's a little bit "punchy" with reasonable loads, like 210 gr at about 1665, or 200 gr at about 1730.)

I had to return a revolver to them so it could be fixed and my turn around time was two weeks, they even shipped it back in a new box.
