Bought it for kid it will be his first real deer rifle. He has been using my Winny 94 in .357 with good results but it has been hard at times getting him to pass up deer that I felt were too far away for the .357 to handle. I got a deal on this 99E in .308 and it will hopefully bring home the venison in a few weeks. It the elcheapo hardwood stock version but it will get the job done.

Can anybody tell me when they switched to the tang safety from the lever safety?

Anybody have a good resource to tell me were I can find the approximate age of this thing?

Pops passed down one he picked up a few years ago in 243, mag fed built around '95 or so... I've been shooting it last few weeks, trying to find the accuracy loads. So far it is a 2-3 moa gun with everything I've thrown in it. It's a nice light gun for carrying. 243 is a sweet round for it, I imagine the 308 is going to kick like a mule.

I had a thread on it here...

There were some savage forums with ser number/year range info that someone linked to me but I don't have them handy. Google..

Grew up hunting with a 99 in 300 savage.  Great guns.  Factory ammo shoots 2-3 inch groups at 100 for me...my handloads are consistent at 1.5.  Try this link...lots of info here.

.308" puts in the 1960's to the '90's, I believe.  Pretty action.

This is my Savage 99, I think it's an EG?  Made in the mid-late 50's I think, chambered in .300 Savage.  Has an old scope on it... I have about $450 in this rifle, any experts know it's value?

Savage 99C series A in .308 here with a Leupold 2X7 scope.   In a week or so hopefully it will account for some venison.

Beautiful rifle. I had a pair of 250s like it. Was it made in Utica?

I don't know... it's in the back of the safe... I'll have to dig it out and see... last I remember, the serial number put it as made in the Mid 1950's... does that sound right (based on the looks)?

I think the move to Mass. was in 47.

Got a 99E in .308 too. Inherited it from my father. He bought the rifle (used I think) back in late 60's-early 70's. I've never fired it and it's just been sitting in my rifle rack for 10 years.
Gonna have to take it with me on my next trip to the range.

Here's an old (and bad) "potato camera" pic.

Also, if you look at the front of the lever boss, there should be a number/letter stamped there. The letter corresponds to the date of manufacture.

The "V" on mine indicates 1968 manufacture.

Hope this helps.

I looked for the lever boss stamping but it doesn't have one. I'm guessing 60s or 70s manufacture.
