I posted back on march of 2015 (Storm shelter / Vault in archives) and just wanted to give a quick update.

Since i posted last here are some upgrades.

Electric actuator for the shelter door - This is using a battery that is being maintained. there are two rocker switches to control the door (one above hidden and one below).
Finished interior walls - Filled walls with concrete and covered with 3/4" plywood with carpet. steel, concrete, then plywood.
Made new shelving - made new shelving covered in carpet.
Installed surveillance system - DVR is in vault
Ran landline for phone - don't have the phone i want yet.
Added some toys...

Very very cool! Just make sure you store some tools and supplies down there. Some day it might get covered up by a house and you might need to cut your way out. What happens if that door doesn't push up? You don't want it to become a tomb...

How long can you breathe down there before you run out of air?

What company makes it? Wife and I really want one but no dealers in our area. The original thread said $ 12k but how much for regular folks?

Water removal? (tornado damages house, torrential rain fills up shelter)
Air supply if house burning on top of you?
Alternate exit if debris on top of you?
Way to communicate out if all of the above?

All good thoughts...I believe with what I have currently I can get out even if house collapses on the door. Also I have many relatives and friends close by. I'm up on a large hill so flooding will not be an issue.. just the rain that comes in small vent holes will be what would enter the shelter. If for some reason I'm down there for a fire I would seal off the vents to prevent oxygen from being sucked out. I would have enough oxygen to out last the fire. Communication... now if fire or tornado hit chances are my external antennas would be gone as well as power. ..so.. I'll be out of luck there. Any suggestions for communication devices?

Have you thought about installing a land line?  They've been around for about 100 years or so, pretty effective.  They don't handle texting very well, though.

Landlines, unless armored, would still be subject to destruction at any point above ground (ie. on the side of the house, telephone poles to your house, demarcs at property line, etc).

I think I'd like to have some sort of tunneled exit away from the structure.

There's no perfect solution.  Cable internet is typically run underground, though often they have junction boxes above ground.  Any antennae above ground for wireless internet are subject to the same destructive forces that are collapsing the house on top of your exit in your worst case scenario.

You probably need a pet mole that you can attach an aerial to his collar and punch out that way.

Or, attach the shelter to a root cellar that you can stash fill in while you tunnel your way out.
