I am looking at a Sig556 Classic?  This has the stamped  steel lower reciever, side folder  and takes the original Swiss mags.  It looks like the original 551.  I am not sure exactly what Sig referred to these as.

What model is it?

What you I expect to pay?

What is too much?

What is a no brainer price?

I could not find any in the EE to go by.g

Thanks!

It's hard to say. is it a folding and retractable stock or just a folder? Does it have the fishgill hand guards or the classics? Is it a 556 Classic SWAT model?

Just so you know if you don't already, Sig no longer supports the Classic or sells any parts for it.

When I bought mine four years ago it had the folding and retracting stock. I paid $775.00 for it. Since then I've put a folding stock on it and bought a second lower receiver.  My original plan was to also buy a 556 Classic pistol, do a form-1 and have an SBR to go with my rifle. When Sig dropped the classic, the prices shot up and they all disappeared.

This is the version that has a lower and side folder much like the original 551 series.  Also it has the original Swiss style handguards.

A true Swiss lower, on it's own is going to run you $1000+.  Handguards and stock are also a few hundred separately.

What upper/barrel/sight combo does it have?

Without knowing all the info or seeing pics I would say you're looking at $1800-2k

Yes most likely a 551A1, I've seen them around 1200-1300 depending on accessories. They are not real Swiss lowers but they look sort of like them and do use Swiss mags. They would have a fixed trigger guard unlike the Swiss version.

551-A1's did not have a stamped steel lower.  More details or pics are needed from OP.

The 551a1 doesnt have the stamped lower but its made in the style of the Swiss ones. the triggerguard will be the dead giveaway. I own several Swiss SIGs and briefly had a 551A1.

I only got a brief look at it but it had the appearance of the stamped lower.  I don't remember what the TG was like.

The guy wanted $1200.  He had at least 8 mags with the rifle.

the gun with at least 8 mags for $1200 sounds like an exeter made 551-a1.

if it does have a swiss lower it's one hell of a deal

That's a standard price for the rifle.  The 30 round mags are generally $30-50 each so all-in, a pretty good deal.

As Sig is no longer making the rifle, now is the time to buy if you want it.  Don't expect any support from Sig or spare parts from the aftermarket though.

If the OP is right and it is a stamped lower receiver then it is a real Swiss lower. If by chance the gun is a real Sig 551 semi that is Swiss made it will run around $9-11,000.

Anyone have a line on where to get original plastic Swiss 30-rounders with the attachment tabs on the side? CDNN has been out of them for a while.

CDNN has the 20 rounders.  I have not seen the 30's anywhere in a while.

30 rounders are hard to find right now. There is a seller on gunbroker selling 10 packs of 20 rounders for 349.00. That's pretty darn cheap. I have a bunch of 30s but I prefer the 20s, that's what the Swiss military uses anyway.

Easiest way to tell.
The SigUSA 551-A1 has a grey finish.   Regular 556 is black anodized like a AR.

I had the 551-A1 I purchased new 2011-12. Upper and lower was lose, handgaurds were lose and accuracy wasn't great + it's very front heavy and out of balance. Think I paid around $1400 new from CDNN and think they included 4 mags, can't recall. I wouldn't pay more then $1000 for this discontinued rifle with almost zero support on parts from Sig or Aftermarket.

Failed to mention, I traded it in 2014 towards a KAC SR15 E3 and the highest trade I was offered was $750. Either way I was happy to be rid of this Turd.

I also had the classic swat, The 556R and stilll own my 552. All except the 552 was back to Sig for repairs.

It's almost certainly a 551-A1.

This side of a very early 556 (with mostly Swiss made functionals), they are probably the best of t he 556 series in terms of their fidelity to the originals.

I had an early 556 fairly quickly after they came out; until I got my PD trade-in 551, it was my favorite 5.56 rifle. As long as you aren't expecting a true 551 "clone," they are great rifles and a fantastic way to get out of the AR-pattern box.

It IS true that they don't have factory support from SIG USA anymore, but most of the wear items (bolts, carriers, etc) are interchangeable with the Swiss made items, which are easy enough to find. No cheap, necessarily, but it's not common for these things to break.

Prices are up on 551-A1s.  $1200 with mags is go-time.  Two just sold on Gunbroker for $1700 and $1800 with fewer mags.
