Has anybody seen the new Sig 556xi Russian in any of the shops around them? LGS' or bigger venues?

No.

Is the gen 2 556R discontinued now that the 556Xi Russian is out?

I want one and maybe should get one before prices jump.

I just answered my own question. I called Sig's office and was advised that the 556xi Russian hasn't been released yet. All she could say was "later this year".

Bad ass.

It's gonna be tough waiting for the pistol.  My druthers are that it started out as a pistol and grew a stock rather than started as a rifle and lost barrel.

A VERY hard wait.

I'm in the same boat but I am VERY tempted to pick up a rifle and have the barrel chopped.  Honestly, I would probably cut it a bit shorter than the factory 10".  It looks like 8.5"-9" could be done.

Here is a video of an sbr 556xi Russian "in action".

$1,600 . For that amount I'll just buy the rifle for $1,100-$1,200 and chop the barrel.

Some of the pictures on GB are the stock ones SIG has on their web page.  If it's only a right side view, has a plain white background, shows a smooth sided mag, and has the 3 prong FH, it's probably the one from the website.  All the ones that look to show a real gun, as indicated by a different background or the ribbed Tapco mag seem to have the A2 flash hider like mine came with.  I'm guessing SIG hasn't made a .30 cal version of the pronged FH yet and are probably reusing the one on the 716.

How does it handle/feel?

I see a lot of Sig 556XI Russians on gunbroker, for fairly reasonable pricing ($1300) for new product rifles.

I've got the rifle.

However, I planned to chop the barrel after SBR'ing it, but learned from my smithy that since the barrel is tapered, he wouldn't be able to thread it. So I have to wait for the 10" barrel assembly to be released.

I thought that Sig made the inch or so of the barrel at the handguard non tapered so you can cut and thread it. The area just before the taper starts.

Also I think ADCO threads pencil barrels.

There is not enough length to install a 51T mount and suppressor.

The tapered portion is not thick enough for 5/8x24 threads.

Shot mine yesterday and today.  The first shoot was a disaster.  I was using some old Norinco FMJ I had bought in the late 80s for my Hungarian AKM and Chinese SKS.  Using 3 mags (the TAPCO and a second one, and a metal Hungarian mag), I had multiple FTF.  Either the round failed to pick up from the mag, or the round got hung up on the edge of the chamber.  The session ended when a fired case stuck in the chamber and I couldn't get it out at the range.  It was jammed in there hard, the rim was ripped off and it took hammer blows on a cleaning rod down the muzzle to pop the case out.  The outside of the case looked OK, as did the chamber.  The gun had been cleaned before firing.

Went again today and tried recent production ammo from Red Standard Army and Tula.  Also threw a Magpul mag in the mix.  Much better.  Except for a double feed from the Magpul mag, the new stuff ran flawlessly.  Also fired off the last 16 rounds of Norinco ammo from yesterday, and had one fail to pick up again.  Guess the lesson is to use recent production ammo instead of 25 year old Chinese mil spec ammo.  The Norince stuff had run fine in my pre ban Hungarian AKM and Norinco SKS.  It may be possible that the military guns have more generous chamber dimensions than the SIG.

With the right ammo, it works well.  Not too impressed with the Magpul mags, though.  It's a real chore to get the 30th round in there compared to the TAPCO and metal mag, plus it's a little more work getting the front hooked in the magwell cleanly than the other mags too.

What are the factory threads?  Have you measured the larger profile at the end of the hand guard with a set of calipers compared to behind the flash hider?

The thickness is the same right in front of the gas block , and right behind the threads.  The problem is that it isn't far enough from the gas block to thread it AND fit a suppressor.

See for yourself:

Muzzle thread length:

(Factory threads are 5/8x24)

Here's the barrel just in front of the gas block:

Correct me if I'm wrong, but that doesn't look like enough real estate to mount a suppressor.

Ahhh I see what you were saying, I misunderstood and thought you were saying the thickness alone at the hand guard didn't have a large enough OD to attain a 5/8 thread.  Thanks for the pics...  This is the confirmation I needed that I can in fact cut and thread the barrel of a rifle without waiting for the pistol version.

I think my best solution is to cut the barrel and thread it for 1/2x28 (there should be sufficient thickness for this, and still have something of a shoulder.)  Then I will have him bore out a 1/2x28 51T mount to .30 cal.

I just don't want to wait around for a 10" barrel assembly to show up on the market.

Looks like its thick enough to thread. Looking at it again my concern with a supressor mount would be the teath being too close to the gas block and the supressor not being able to screw all the way down.

You do it first and tell us how it worked.
