Ordered one for myself - funny so many people claimed they wanted one, and when Steyr finally made them people slammed their wallets shut. As for the bipod I'd prefer one using a rail mount near the receiver since I don't want something hanging off the barrel moving groups around - I'm not using it as a SAW.

That is sexy!! That but in green had been my favorite rifle of all time. I want one so bad!! My dad's friend carried an a2 when he was in US Customs enforcement and I wanted him to get that set up. But he said I was crazy.

Bet that gg&g bipod would look amazing on there.. Is it possible to buy a receiver stock and barrel to make a gun? I would want to set one up like a dmr for our wide open Wyoming landscape..would rather have a hole gun then just the barrel...thoughts?

I was lead to believe that the best length of barrel for the .223 is 18 inch and anything after just messes with the barrel harmonics.

I wouldn't say they don't have the tooling, more like they don't have the numbers to make it happen. They need a purchase order for at least 500 bi pods to make it happen. I heard the cost on the bipod alone is well over $100, it is a complex little system. Knowing Steyr's cost for the US made 24" barrel, then add the cost of the bipod + Steyr's and dealer's 15-20 percent profit margin you would be well over $750 I imported 200 Steyr Austrian 24" heavy barrels with bipod over 10 years ago, sold them for $750 each and it took well over a year to sell them all. Those were the last of the 24s that Steyr had in stock in Austria, they couldn't sell them. They were made for the LMG AUG. There is less then 350 24" Austrian heavy barrels in the US, GSI use to retail them for $1350 back in the day! That is the reason they now bring well over $1000 when one pops up for sale! Bipods are indeed being made for the 24" Steyr Aug barrels.
I know this to be fact, and was finally told today that we could discuss the project publicly. Manticore Arms is under contract to do the design of the bipod, and Ratworx is under contract to do the manufacturing. The project has been in the works for some time. Per Steyr's requirements, the bipods are made of anodized aluminum, weight is 14 ounces (under one pound was the requirement), legs are length adjustable, and the bipod locks in the deployed and folded position. The bipod can rotate 20 degrees in either direction to accommodate uneven terrain, and is rotation limited by a new barrel nut (not shown). Fins keep a similar look to the original, and protect the leg extension locks from accidental deployement, and also protect the hands from a hot barrel when folded. The physical prototypes are in production right now. Here are some shots of the 3D computer models.

Richard I do not know the answer to that, only that Steyr wants to make bipods for barrels for the civilian U.S. market as they were getting lots of requests for them after the 24" barrel came out. We actually started this project two years ago when the 24" barrel order was first placed with FN by Steyr, then Steyr decided to hold off, and now they see the demand for the bipod and the project has been up and running again recently. My personal impression is that they thought 24" barrels with bipods would be too expensive for the U.S. civilian market to want them, but as we all know it is the bipods that actually make the 24" barrel desirable!

$475 for a barrel ($490 shipped) is a dang good price considering what you get. Heck the gas system alone is ~130.
Now with the manticore bipod, you'll be kicking yourself in the pants for not jumping on this. The talk of "salad days" of AR stuff, this year has been the "salad days" of the AUG - buy it up while you can, the time will come when it is either A. prohibitively expensive or B. no longer available. |
