Just saw this (bad link )
24" heavy barrel with a talon mount and nice glass...

Let me try this again http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_2_530/252224_Steyr_AUG_24_TARGET_LMG_Heavy_Barrels__475.html

Get back to me when they add the bipod....

Ordered one for myself - funny so many people claimed they wanted one, and when Steyr finally made them people slammed their wallets shut.  As for the bipod I'd prefer one using a rail mount near the receiver since I don't want something hanging off the barrel moving groups around - I'm not using it as a SAW.

Can you even get the bipods for these?

What is the chance of getting them again?  How much were they going for the last time they were available?

I bought this a few years ago for $1500. That was the price of the barrel only.

That is sexy!!  That but in green had been my favorite rifle of all time. I want one so bad!!  My dad's friend carried an a2 when he was in US Customs enforcement and I wanted him to get that set up.  But he said I was crazy.

That's my plan as well, mount a bipod on the A3 grip rail. Sort of like what Uruguay does.

Forgive my ignorance, but what is the point of a 24" barrel in a bullpup that shoots 5.56?

Steyr no longer has the tooling to make the original bipods.

That being said, I am fairly confident you will see 24" barrels with bipods coming out eventually.

I think one of the reasons these aren't selling like "hot cakes" is the lack of bipod.
FWIW, the 24" LMG bipod barrels are more accurate with the bipod off, rather than on.

Hopefully whatever bipod was/is in the works will work with the current 24" barrels (without machining stops into the bipod groove).

This pic makes me want..I like the look of the bipod on the grip rail.. Bet that gg&g bipod would look amazing on there.. Is it possible to buy a receiver stock and barrel to make a gun? I would want to set one up like a dmr for our wide open Wyoming landscape..would rather have a hole gun  then just the barrel...thoughts?

I was lead to believe that the best length of barrel for the .223 is 18 inch and anything after just messes with the barrel harmonics.

Exactly what I had in mind.

I can't see the 24" barrels going back into production, and ditto for the bipods, though I'd be happy to be wrong.  I like the idea of having 24" of barrel in a gun the length of an AR carbine.

Honestly, the only way I'd do pre-orders is with a deposit because, as the old saying goes "Buyers are Liars"

Not quite - more like the '24" barrel' has *ALWAYS* been a heavy with a bipod and when Steyr finally made them we were told they were neither!

I accept that Steyr delivered a 24" barrel, but the general expectation was a 24" heavy barrel with bipod in the configuration LONG known to be an "AUG 24-inch barrel".  I was (and am) willing to pony up for that configuration but a light-barrel 24" makes little sense to me and has no appeal to me.  Now it seems like when the 24" showed up they were "heavier" so there was obviously a lot of confusion along the way.

Pro-tip: make sure that you and your customers are talking about the same thing before building it! :(  I'm afraid this is one of those "road-to-hell" scenarios where Steyr and their customers both had good intentions but there was a huge disconnect in WHAT the product was.

Richard

Bipods are indeed being made for the 24" Steyr Aug barrels.

I know this to be fact, and was finally told today that we could discuss the project publicly.

Manticore Arms is under contract to do the design of the bipod, and Ratworx is under contract to do the manufacturing.  The project has been in the works for some time.

Will these be available *WITH* barrels or only alone?  In other words, do I need to snag a 24" barrel now while I can (and hope these appear), or will I be able to buy the package deal?

TIA!

I have been holding out for this setup for a long time. I have always wanted a Aug lmg setup. But the 2 k price for the barrel killed it for me.

Super sweet of Manti core to do this.

Gerrr only so many things you can buy

$475 for a barrel ($490 shipped) is a dang good price considering what you get. Heck the gas system alone is ~130.

Now with the manticore bipod, you'll be kicking yourself in the pants for not jumping on this.

The talk of "salad days" of AR stuff, this year has been the "salad days" of the AUG - buy it up while you can, the time will come when it is either A. prohibitively expensive or B. no longer available.

Pair one of those with a 24" heavy barrel and Steyr quality and you have a sale sir.  Their 9mm conversion kit did not let down, if this is on par, then you should be able to sell shitloads.

Will work well with my A3 grip rail / bipod until Manticore gets an AUG bipod out.

Have you ever checked with Steyr to see if they have any of the original style 24" barrel muzzle brakes available?

The 24" barrels that Steyr made are 'Heavy" Barrels identical to the original 24s, they also have the slot behind the check nut for the bi pod.

I don't see the bipod tilt stops machined into the bottom of the barrel.

BUT, the price is sure right.

Quick picture of the 24" barrel with the first prototype of the new bipod.

A few changes have been made since this version.  Most notable is the legs on the production version will be a bit longer to accommodate for all your guys running 42 rounders with your 24" LMG barrels.
