I have some Nosler .429 bullets for my 44mag. I wanted to try some in the 44-40 which tend to be smaller (.427 or so). I normally run cast in 44-40 but was wondering if anyone ever sized any down?
Of course, I already tried a few and all seems ok. I am not thinking the results will be as accurate as bullets made for the purpose. But they look ok. Anyone have experience with this? Issues? tips? Wanted to ask before I go nuts with it. thanks! |

Check the diameter of those bullets, I recently bought some Nosler 240 SJHP and they are .428 with some even closer to
427, giving me fits in my .44 revolver. I just mailed a sample in to them for them to check out. If I get somewhere with a better signal I'll post a pic of one in a micrometer. |

Just below .429. But I plan on trying a 200gr instead. Will know when I get them. |

wow. Well, I would hope for that for my next batch but I don't want to measure every one!

I have resized jacketed bullets in the Lee push through sizing dies. $20 Spray bullet with case lube and run through sizer, pretty easy. http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/gg272/dryflash3/Powder%20Coat/P1010913_zpsgw5cbnys.jpg Doing a 31 cal powder coat bullet here. Same equipment for jacketed bullets. View Quote Been reading about those. I have resized cast .459 down to .452 on the RCBS. However, maybe running a bunch of jacket bullets on the RCBS (although less sizing), would be better on the Lee... Although, the RCBS has built in lubing Not sure the bullet lube is as smooth running as a case type lube. Only single stages I have are the LNL and Co-Ax. Think the LNL is beefy enough? Won't work on the Co-Ax. |

Anything more than a few thousandths I would recommend doing in two passes; ie two separate sizing dies to do it in stages.

Yep, Lee bullet sizer and the bullets just lubed with DIY case lube.

Brownells box arrived today... .427 sized Lee lube and size kit.
I resized about 50 test bullets for this weekend. I can honestly say it was so much easier than the RCBS lube a matic for sizing Jacketed bullets. Very pleased with $20 purchase. I loaded up a handful in 44-40 with unique. Should be a neat round on Saturday. Thanks for help and tip! (Although I am not giving up my cast bullets in 44-40, i will like both). |

It will make a mess, and just cause smoking when you shoot the bullets and don't get all the alox wax off before they are loaded Instead, just use standard case lube to lube the jacket bullets to put them through the sizer. Diy case lube, http://www.ar15.com/forums/t_6_42/330292_Homemade_case_lube.html |

Rest are sitting in front of fan to air dry. Better option for cleaning? |

Be sure to check the diameter of your sized bullets.
I had to open a few of my Lee sizers up as they sized bullet smaller than what they were marked. BTW, told you . |

Ran some formerly .429 200gr Nosler JHP through my 44-40 SA Uberti today over a proper dose of Unique. Ran fantastic. I will run some next week in my Rossi lever. I only wish I could get the LNL powder drop to do a little better with the Unique. Finally getting stick powders to drop a little better but Unique is rather... unique.

View Quote If FMJ or plated, then they get thrown into the dry tumbler with Zilla desert blend media. The same that I do with loaded ammo to get the lube off the cases before storage as well. The only thing you don't want to do is throw lead exposed bullet into the crush walnut media, since it will embed into the lead during tumbling, and a mess to try to clean that up instead. |

Would you recommend a pistol or rifle powder drum for Unique at 8-9gr? I had run the rifle thinking bigger is better since there is a much bigger area for the powder to drop into. Perhaps this was a wrong assumption. I will try the pistol one this weekend.

Settle the powder in hopper, same stroke/speed/force on press handle every time. View Quote View All Quotes View All Quotes Quoted:

View Quote I was just reminded about this - my experience with sizing .311" FMJ bullets to .308" was the other way around. The bullets were a little over .308" when I sized them. I ran 'em through again and they were a lot closer to .3080" the second time. It's probably the type of jacket that causes this. |

I am a bit confused about the sizing 311 to 308 everyone keeps talking about... why bother? 308 are super cheap in comparison unless you have a cheap stash of 311. If so, seems I would save them for the mosin? |

When you find bags of 100 .311 pulled bullets for $5 at the funshow and want to shoot them in a .308 bore, I size em.
