Just wondering.  Cleaning my rifle from this afternoon and the last loads I shot were CFE-223.  When I'm running a patch through the bore with Hoppes #9, the edges of the patch which would normally be white because they're down past the jag, are coming out red.  I've never seen that before.  Any ideas?

Or how about the Hornady AMax red ballistic tips?  Only thing red I can think of that's been anywhere near the gun.  Ballistic tips wouldn't leave any trace, would they?

I have never had that problem with polymer tips, be them red, orange, white, yellow, green, or blue.

I can never remember that happening with CFE223, but the one caliber I was using it in doesn't get shot too much. And I only shot about a pound before I switched to a different powder.

Then again, I don't use Hoppes #9 either.

CFE 223 has a copper eraser as part of it's chemical makeup.

Could it be lifting up old copper fouling? Thinking out loud here.

That was what I was thinking too, but I'd expect it to be blue or green, not red.  I was just wondering if anybody else had seen it.

I have seen a white powder on my flash hider after shooting several hundred rounds loaded with CFE223.

Have never seen red.

Pics? How red, we talking fire engines, crimson, or rust?

I've shot a lot of Amaxs in .308 and Vmaxs in .223 never got any red.

CFE is not the first or only powder to contain copper fouling reducers, just the first to make a big deal of it, even if it were, it seems pretty widely used yet red patches aren't, so I don't think that's it.

Never noticed red after 12+ lbs of CFE223, but I rarely patch the bbl. I use a boresnake almost exclusively in all my guns. I have a Dewey rod, I'll run a few patches through it next time for curiosities sake.

My CFE 223 loads leave a clean barrel, nothing red.

Rust in your barrel is what you describe.

I doubt it's that.  The rifle was cleaned well last week, shot a few times in the back yard, cleaned again, taken to the range and shot ~25 times with the loads I'm working up.  The cleaning after that 25 is where I started to see the red.  Did not see any red the previous two times, just after the last 25 where the last 7 or 8 had the CFE223 powder that I've never used before.

Running accuracy loads now with BLC-2 and CFE223 with multiple wt. bullets and powder loads..  Haven't seen any red.  The CFE223 runs real clean.
