Wow hard to believe they would discontinue such a popular powder. Looks like clays as well.

Ya might want to send Hodgdon an email or give them a call.

This info is all over the internet and those that have contacted Hodgdon directly have a completely different take on this.

What I have found on the internet, not Hodgdon directly, is that Yes, General Dynamics would like to phase out most if not all off their older powders that have high production costs like 231.

No, they will not completely discontinue 231 as it is a very popular powder.

However, I got this info from the Net and not the Hodgdon Horse mouth, best to check it out personally.

It would be better if someone could contact General Dynamics directly, but that ain't gunna happen.

I just found this on another forum.  What is it a Facebook page?

I guess that's why Longshot and Titegroup is 2.5x less expensive right?.  The part about the waste stream makes sense though, if indeed true.

Well hopefully that doesn't cross over to Alliant powders as that's what I started loading, and still do.  American select, Green Dot, BE-86, Power pistol(aka flame thrower).

I have what amounts to a lifetime supply of W231.  But just in case, what other pistol powder works well in 38, 357, 9mm L and 45ACP?

That's a sad bit of info. I have enough to last a while but 231 has been my go to for a while. Maybe I'll try out CFE pistol or Ramshot Zip next.

Ramshot Zip has been very hard if not impossible to find after the explosion in the Belgian powder plant.

It is available now in several On-line dealers, so if you want some you might want to act fast.

Pick one.

If I were to use one powder for those cartridges, I would select True Blue.

During the last powder shortage I wanted HP38 or Win231, couldn't find either for months at a reasonable price.

It forced me to look else where in the pistol powder world which turned into a good thing.

Titegroup is cheaper, can do all of the pistol cartidges I have and goes much futher per pound.

Since then I found 8 pound kegs of W231 and HP38 but I just pass now as I found my favorite pistol powder and is plenty full and relatively cheap.

I use power pistol for these.

I used to use 231, 1000's of rounds of it without a problem but then I found TG and never went back.  I still have a few lbs of 231, maybe it'll be a collectors item and I can cash in at some point.   I think 231 is a 'safer' powder for newcomers, it would be hard to double charge a pistol with 231 and not notice.    I find TG a bit more static senstive i.e. clingy, then 231 but it meters wonderfully for me and in a pinch I can use it for 308 subsonic when I simply cannot find any trailboss.

Wow, this is disappointing news.  W231 is my go to powder for my high-volume cast bullet loads in 9mm, .45, and .38 Special.

I have a few pounds left, but that won't last forever.  Major bummer.

Accurate #5, I used it before a friend turned me onto Win231. As far as I am concerned AA#5 is a cleaner burning powder than Win231.

Wow. That's a kick in the pants. I've used 231 for a long time. It's been my favorite for 9mm and 45 Auto. Time to find a new go to for both of them.

Damnit! 231 has been my preferred pistol powder for years.

Aw. crap.

W231 has been a go to powder on my bench since I started.  I am sure there are others. I have used bullseye frequently too. AA5 has been good but not as accurate in my ACP loads.  I use clays too but it's a backup powder more or less.

I wonder if the new powders truly are better and cleaner or simply cheaper to make with a higher profit margin. Lord knows we haven't seen the savings at the retail counter.   Most shops sell similar powders for nearly the same price.

Well I have been meaning to give new modern powders a shot. Looks like it's going to be sooner rather than later.

True Blue is a true ball powder, eh?  Is that readily available or unobtainium, like W231?

I sent the below to Hodgdon's help line:

There is a rumor flying around the Internet that Hodgdon/Winchester is planning to eventually eliminate production of HP38/W231 powder.

Will you please confirm or refute this?

Thank you,

45acp lead and WST for the WIN !!!  I been on the WST wagon practically since it came along as replacement for the old 452 (likely just a re-labeling)...

I bought what WST I could bear spending money on last year when powder started to trickle in, but seems WST  not being seen, and AA Handicap come along,, label load for 1 1/8oz AA reflects a 0.9gr charge difference that WST at same velocity, so suspect AA Handicap is replacing WST ??

Seen WSF last week, local FFL has a few singles, and a 4lb

WST was my favorite, and I used W231, too.

I haven't bought but 2# of Winchester WST in recent years, but other than that, I just couldn't find any Winchester, so I have lots of others I could get in the meantime: True Blue, AA no. 7, Power Pistol, Unique, Bullseye. I've used VV N350 with good results, too.

I have some others like Blue Dot, which I don't like, but heck when you can't get anything else you settle for what you can...

I used to prefer HP38/W231 for my 9mm target loads.

I have since replaced it with green dot and don't miss the old powder a bit.

Added bonus is green dot is bulkier, so less chance of a double charge in bigger cases.

True Blue is a ball powder that actually is shaped in a ball, so it measures very well. Much better than W231 that I quit using years ago.

Trouble is, it flows so well, it started flowing out the front of my Dillon powder measure and on to my loading bench.

I got a reply from Hodgdon today:

That is a rumor and no one has told me that these powders are being discontinued. I have asked the question about this. Those two powders do sell well but the issue is that there is not enough of it being made and they are still shipping in limited supplies.

Still...  I'll continue to buy win231 while it's available (have a 2 1/2 year back order for 16 pounds.).  But, I will also experiment with other powders because one day they might pull the plug.

I look forward to seeing these new powders at 1/2.5 the price of Win231 then....

LGS had HP-38 and W231 on shelf today.  I haven't seen either in person in 2+ years.  They had 4-1lb containers of each.  I bought 2 lbs of W231.  Hopefully when that runs out  it will either be available online in bulk or I may have to think about switching.  I still have at least a pound so 3lbs should last me 18+ months.

I have so many other pistol powders now I've kind of given up on 231.  I  only have about a half pound of it left.  It was a good powder for sure but there's lots of better alternatives.

The one that really makes me sad is no more Clays.   :(

I have three pounds of Clays left and that's that.

I saw about a dozen types of pistol powder on the shelf at the local Cabelas for the first time in a couple of years.  No 231/HP38, but several others that I haven't seen in a long time.

I'm still working through an 8# can of 231, so I should be good for a while.

And as others have noted, the shortage gave an opportunity to work up some loads with some other good powders.
