Not trying to beat a topic to death. I was loading some .223 and got to thinking. Has anybody got an explanation as to why FC brass is so short?
My latest batch was around 1.40 to 1.43. I know the min SAAMI spec is a min. of 1.30. Why would Federal use such sort cases compared to others?

I'm not worried about it as these end up as blasting ammo or get converted to 7.62x25. Just curious.

I'd bet that is Federal ( ATK ) being cheap.... all these "slivers" of brass add up.

That is about the best idea I could think of. Other than them being nice and saving reloaders from trimming for a few firings.

Did I miss something? Federal 223 brass at 1.40" to 1.43"? I just checked about 20 rounds of FC 223 brass and none are shorter than 1.7390"

Federal brass makes great blackout brass.

I have a batch that I have loaded 4 times now.

Is the brass really 1.40 to 1.43, or did you forget a number someplace?

If it is that short, I would throw it in the recycle bin.

I think the OP is reporting his find of headspace, not OAL case length.

Think about it.

I haven't loaded an .223 FC in a few months. That last batch was fine.

I have about 1k of once shot, not prepped, .223 FC brass. I shot them over the last year from an FN NATO chamber or a Rainier Arms NATO chamber.

I just checked about a dozen.
Case length: 1.735-1.740
Shoulder using a Hornady gauge: 1.456-1.461

Because it's not high quality and over millions of rounds making them short saves money.

Why I have a poor opinion of FC 223 brass. If I come by some, I trade it off.

Some folks use it, but I'll pass.

My sentiments exactly. I'll trade it off or give it away to keep from having to waste space storing it.

EXACTLY I not found any problem with it. Some of my FC brass is on its 4th reload and showing no signs of distress.

I stopped using fc brass when I found 3 cases where the primer had fallen out when I was tumbling the lube off. This was the 4th loading.

I have a few different lots of FC some have headstamp Large FC, small fc, some with 223 rem or 223rem no space between them, what I noticed is some I sized for my 6x45 came out over 1.760 and some came out 1.37, 1.40,etc I will mostlikely use them for test loads as they vary in weight as well to wildly,  I am using my LC lots for my hunting/target loads.

I have bags of FC nickel plated. it's bolt action specific.  I started saving the wolf polymer for the sub non-cycling loads. It's like my 223 has been color coded for ease of use

i will never use FC brass in 223.
its trash. garbage, shit. belongs at the scrap yard
i have had my AR go down twice because of primers blowing out under normal loads.
i cull out any FC from my brass stash and sell it or scrap it.
