What has everyone found to be their pet loads or efforts in duplicating a MK262 load?

I use a sierra 77 grain HPBT with Varget, H355, and IMR 4895.  I use 23 grains of powder with all of them.  This is my personal load.  Varget works the best, but I use the other two if I run out.

I ran into pressure before I got near 262 speeds with Varget but had good accuracy.
I got 262 speeds with CFE223 but much better accuracy 100 fps slower.

Right now I am seeing good accuracy with 23.3gr of Varget.

I don't use Varget anymore.  Mostly because I don't like trickling each charge if I can help it, but also because you can't find it on the shelves.

8208XBR works well with the 77gr.  I use around 23.2gr and get great performance out to 600yds for high power.  Yes, I trickled all the charges for the competition.....but for practice or plinking at reduced ranges it meters well enough.  (I actually measured the variance of each since I was trickling them up anyway.  The charges seem to be within 0.2gr of whatever you set at)

TAC is my favorite.  It meters better and gets almost exactly the same performance as the 262 issue stuff.  I have been told that BlackHills uses a commercial version of TAC in their 262 round.  I can't remember the charge off the top of my head.  Seems like it might have been 23.5gr....I'll have to check and edit.

Good luck finding any of those powders in the store.

The new Lyman Manual for the AR-15  max load is 25.0 grains of Varget for the 77 SMK. Does that seem high to anyone else?

I plan on doing a ladder test up to that....

25.0 gr. would definitely be 5.56 NATO pressures.

Most books show .223 Rem max around 24.0, which is where I load mine for best accuracy out to 800 yards.  It chronos at about 2800 fps from a 26" barrel with a Wylde chamber.

I found out tac works a lot better. It get the velocity and accuracy. Cfe got the velocity but not the accuracy. Varget never hit the velocity.

I shot several hundred rounds of 24.5 with no issue in a mid range (2-700m) class but it wasn't close to mk262 velocity. It was acceptable accuracy.

When I first started loading to clone MK262, the manuals put 25g of Varget as a hot load/compressed, but I've seen higher loads somewhere.  I stopped at 25g of Varget as my pet load and come up at about 2750FPS.  I wanted to get to 2800, but I started loosing accuracy.

I did have a accuracy node at 23g that I would have stuck with if I wasn't such speed/long range freak.

I tried the 25.0gr Varget loads in my Mk 12 and just beat up the brass. Accuracy was good at 25gr but the brass was getting killed in my gun. 18" Douglas with an Ops Inc 12th can on the end of it.  I get the best accuracy at 23.5gr and 24.6gr of Varget in my gun. This is with number 41 primers.

i went up to 22.9 grains and quit because the velocity wasnt there

I switched to RL15 and picked up alot more velocity, im already much quicker than i was with varget and with less pressure sign

24.2 gr of RL15 out of my 16" carbine is averaging 2610 fps

24 grains of RL15 is my pet load for 77 SMK's or 77 gn Noslers.   Getting around 2600 fps with an 18 inch white oak barrel.  24 grains of TAC gives a little more velocity but it's not as accurate.

Has anyone tried N-140 Vit.? 2 of the books (Serria and Hornady) say it has the best accuracy for 77  75 grainers. I have some , but haven't tried it . When I spoke with Serria , they told me that the trick was to use Rem. 7 1/2 primers with N-140  with 77 gr. bullets.

24.3-24.8 n140 has worked well for me, 24.8 being the upper end.. 24.3 shot great.

However the best load I have ever used is 23.5 H4895 with the 77.

Holy cow!  I've been using h4895 with the 69 grain smk with good results and have been considering trying it with the 77's.  Hodgdon says 22.6 is max and it is a compressed load.  What velocity did you get out of 23.5 and what barrel length?

It not as bad as it sounds.. Lol just about every load with a 77 at mag length is compressed.... I have been to 24.0 with a 77, with a 75 Hornady 24.2 is sweet.

In a 20 in Krieger 1/7.7 twist, CLE chamber with 23.5 gr H4895 I get 2750 fps.

You can start at 23.0, it will shoot good at 23.0-23.5 with 23.2 and 23.5 being good spots for me. LC cases wolf SRM primers. 2.250 COAL. ( fit in any mag that way)

Take a look here for some ideas...
High Power reloading

ETA, I went distinguished shooting 77 lapuas with 24.0 H4895 in Lapua cases. Same rifle. Last time I shot it at 600 I had a 198-11x

23.5 shot just as good but I lost some speed. In a Wylde chamber I still use 24.0 and get the same speed as I do in the CLE with 23.5.

With 69 sierras I use 24.5-25.0

I'm not real familiar with the scoring, but is 200 a perfect score?  The 11x is 11 shots on the X or otherwise what we would call a "bullseye" correct?  If I'm understanding correctly that is pretty damn amazing.  It's nice to be able to get information from guys like you that really know what they are doing.

I use 24.2 with the h4895 and 69's for 2777 out of an 18" barrel with a 5.56 chamber and 1 in 8 polygonal twist.  I'm using PMC cases and throwing out the ones with off center flash holes other than that nothing special.  On a 10 shot string I get a spread of 38 fps from lowest to highest velocity.  I can shoot sub moa 5 shot groups at 600 yards with that load, but it isn't always centered on the target

I wasn't aware you could get that much velocity out of the 77 grain smk with h4895 or I would already have made the switch.  Of course I would probably have less velocity with my 18" barrel, but still getting close to 2700 would be nice as long as the poi was consistent.

In reference to 77's (Noslers) and H4895
I get 2805 fps out of a 26" Krieger with 22.3 grains
It has a .223 Match chamber, if I did it again I would have just ordered the 5.56 chamber.

Yes that is correct. Iron sights prone with a sling. X ring is the center. 200 would be perfect. I have shot a 199 with a service rifle, and a 200-17x with a match rifle. Better sights on the Match rifle... ;)  right now I am shooting Mk262 Mod 01 at 600 because that's what I am given to use. It does quite well at 600 too. Been high 190's with 9-10 x's so far when I pay attention.

H4885 is great for 77's and 75's. If you don't mind single loading rounds jump a 75 Berger VLD .035 from the lands with 24-24.5 H4895.... That's a good load.

IMR 8208 xbr is a good 77 powder as is MR2000 power pro. Lots of better choices than Varget out there for 223. In 308 Varget is hard to beat though.

Yeah the match chamber is tight, and has a short throat. Pressure comes fast. A Wylde or 5.56 is a great chamber and you still get the accuracy that a "match" chamber is supposed to deliver.

Talking about TAC and the 77 nosler, I shot some (about 100) of my go-to 24.6gr. loads this weekend at medium range (520 yards) through a Les Baer Thunder Ranch. The rifle is stock. According to my ballistic calculator, I was getting 2805 FPS velocity after truing the firing solution (after already taking into account the higher Litz BC of .377 rather than the factory .34 of the pill), which I frankly don't believe given prior chrono data (showed 2670 fps). At the same time, we busted a box of sporting clays like they were beach balls out there. FWIW, it doesn't get much better than that in an AR for me. 3.2 mils got me out there, and it stayed on all day. Brass didn't look any different that some LC factory 62 grain the guy next to me was putting out.

This thread and info got me curious about the 77's with H4895 so I had to try it out.  I'm well stocked on H4895 so if it didn't work out it wasn't going to hurt my feelings.  I loaded up one round each at 22.2 grains 22.5 and 22.7 just to be safe and watch for pressure signs.  From there I loaded five rounds each of 23.0, 23.1, 23.2. 23.3, 23.4, 23.5, and 23.6.   My accurate load came in at 23.4 grains and an average velocity of 2661 fps at 73 degrees and 850 ft elevation.  23.6 got me up to 2700 average, but it was a terrible group.  I then loaded up 25 rounds of the 23.4 grain load and tested them today.  I'm very happy with the results as over the 5 groups of 5 rounds I averaged about 0.75" at 100 yards.  This has been my average with my previous 69 grain load as well, but the 77's should give me more range and be a little bit better in the wind.

I've got myself a printout from JBM for this load now and plan to hit the 500 yard range soon to work on confirming and truing up my chart.  After that I want to push this load out 800+.

You'll likely find that those 77's won't keyhole on you at your previous distance, but you've already been told that.  Happy Shooting.

Hello

Here in Aus I am using ar2208 ( I believe is sold to you guys as Varget )

I'm loading 25.0 grn in LC mil once fired prepped weight sorted brass, br4 primers and 80 grn VLD's for a avg 2950 fps with sd of 7 in my bolt gun.

I also have a load for bm8208 ( I believe is sold to you guys as 8208 " something ) also a great load but not what I use for long range ( only getting 2467 fps with a sd of 2 ) using the same brass and primer just 20.8 grn of bm8208.

The rifle itself is just a Tikka T3 with a 1-8 twist.
