I looked in all my manuals but cannot find a .223 load using Hodgdon H4831. I bought about 10 lbs of the stuff when I was shooting a lot of .270 but sold my rifle. Anyway I have other powders but want to use it up and am looking for a safe starting load for my AR-15 and single shot .223. Any suggestions??

H4831 is really slow for .223 Rem, even with an 80 grain bullet. Speeds produced will be low. You'll need a case full of gunpowder. I wouldn't be surprised if the brass would not seal the chamber in the rifle.

Buy another .270 or a .30-06, or trade the H4831 to someone for some Reloder 15.

By the way, I'm not recommending you load with a case full of H4831 gunpowder.

H4831 is way to slow to use in the .223 trade it for something more suitable

4831 isn't going to work in .223, period.

Get yourself some H335 for any bullet 62 grains and lower and RL-15 for anything heavier.

Bullet? COAL?

ETA: Yep = too slow and you can't get enough in the case anyway
