Whatever you do it's going to be expensive, just no way around it. Big calibers just cause bigger dollar signs to roll up in people's eyes.
Have you looked at the 14.5 JDJ? It uses a .50 case necked up to 14.5mm and is exempt from any laws making it DD. The problem with spotter tracer is finding cases. If you can't find them you have to make your own from full size .50 cases. CH4D makes the dies to form the brass once you cut it. MrBen has an upper in .50 ST, I'll ask him to post as he used to have a link with a good write up on it. |

Brass I can form with no problem; maybe. I've installed a couple of Pac-Nor pre-chambered barrels on Savages (very easy) and one on a Remington. The Remington barrel was made with a short shank, I merely put it on my lathe and machined a few thousands off the shoulder to decrease the head space just enough to close on the go gauge. It's the action I need. What I don't want to do is ream a chamber. I'll save that learning experience for something that doesn't use 50 plus grains of powder.
I've seen the larger JDJ calibers and am not interested in them at this time. Since many of the ranges around me have some sort of prejudice against the 50 BMG (they won't even let me use it with a silencer and a subsonic load) I want something that is .510 caliber but less power. I will eventually suppress any intermediate 50 cal I make. An ar-15 upper chambered in 12.7x77 sounds like a good idea Randy |

I bought one of the early UltraLite50 uppers from Dennis Chaney and Marcos Ruiz just after the California 50BMG rifle ban took effect.
It certainly is a light recoiling rifle in standard M48 loadings, but can be loaded hotter using normal mil-spec BMG bullets too. Here's a write-up I did on the conversion back in the day... http://www.daplane.com/50bmg/ul50rpt.htm I have used 50BMG blank brass to make M48 (50spotter) brass too. This is the process I used: http://www.daplane.com/50bmg/M48/blank2m48.htm Ultralite50 was sold a few years ago and is now known as TactiLite. Got a pic of the rifle that shoots those mini 50BMG's? Nice close and personal blow a big friggin hole in something weapon. Looks like a PITA to make the brass though. 50 beowolf may be the cheaper ticket.

Really not that bad to form the brass... not as bad as the work it takes to make .416barrett from BMG brass!

The 50 Beowulf uses light weight 50 caliber pistol bullets, not the much heavier 51 caliber rifle bullets I want to shoot.
I'm exchanging e-mail with Zel Custom (Tactilite) about an AR-15 upper chambered in M48 spotter-tracer. Still have to decide on which barrel to use and the length. I'll be making a silencer for mine. It will be a bit smaller than the 2"x16" can I made for my LAR. Ranb |

See if they can make it so that you can switch barrels from BMG to ST. That way you could have two guns in ones and switch whenever you want to.
That would be the best way to go if you already own a BMG. Plus it's on an upper and has no need for an FFL to get one. I guess you could also have them make you a 416 Barrett and have a 3rd... Better stop, you might be broke soon.

You can use blanks or regular brass to make ST brass. So it really doesn't matter, I would be looking for the quality of the brass.

Depending on the type of blank crimp that was used, it can be converted to .460steyr, .416barrett, or .50spotter. and maybe .50ALS or .50DTC. |

Whats the weight of the rifle? I just sold my safety harbor 50 BMG recently. The weight of the rifle and the jolt from shooting was getting more painful for my back that I had surgery on 4 years ago. Also, how many grains of powder are used when reloading? Heck, if the rifle is lighter and recoil is softer, may have to look into one. |

If you want to shoot my AR-50 sometime, let me know. After being re-barreled and weighing almost 48 pounds, the recoil impulse has been really subdued if using 650 to 700 grain loadings. If you wanted to attend a Match, people would help - all you need to do is ask. my rifle and equipment could be available. |

www.Ligameccorp.com says they can make an M48 upper if I supply the reamer. Anyone know where I can get a reamer? I've looked at the usual places online and don't see them for the M48.

As I recall, the CH4D dies were based on a mansonreamers.com reamer.
Pacifictoolandgauge.com sells them too as .50 BAT spotter (batallion anti tank). http://pacifictoolandgauge.com/50-cal-500-cal-nopix-showcart-/6450-50-bat-spotter-reamer.html Prices are around 225.00+. Don't forget to get the matching headspace gauges. Somebody told me a while back that there was two different types of .50 S-T brass with one of them being much better to reload than the other...anybody heard of such a thing? Also how many reloads can a person expect out of factory .50 S-T brass?
I bought a bunch of .50 S-T brass back when Hi-Tech had it for sale as well as various projos but haven't done anything with them as I couldn't decide whether or not to buy a .50 S-T chambered rifle or go "big" with the .50 BMG. I always like the idea of the .50 S-T having similar ballistics as the .50 BMG at the distance I'd be shooting it and that it uses less powder. An ability for a rifle to change barrels back and forth would be ideal but I don't know if that is feasible or not. How do you guys like your rifles chambered in .50 S-T and also compared to shooting it against a rifle in .50 BMG? |

The two types of 50 ST deal with the primer flash hole. One has a standard type and the other has a tube that goes up into the case.
I think they found that the tube wasn't needed and got rid of them. I'm pretty sure those are the two types, if you find anything more post it. |

The type with the tube was the second type that I was thinking of and I've heard they're not as popular with reloaders as the standard brass. Someday I just need to decide on either a rifle chambered in .50 BMG or .50 S-T and just do it.
