We all hear that the SCAR 17 is hard on optics because of the giant block of metal reciprocating back and forth upon firing--what optics have you had go down on a 17?

None but I have run a TA11E on it and I just ordered a 1.5/6 Elcan

This is very good news--I've used a 4-16 PST on mine without issue, but wanted to change to a smaller optic.

I'm wondering if these reports of optic failures are exaggerated?

Mine and my wifes have killed a Zeiss Z-Point red dot (front lens shattered like it was hit with a hammer), a Kahles Helia L (insides started to be shaken loose), a Burris Signature series(insides were shaken loose quickly) and a Burris XTR Tactical (would no longer hold zero and adjusted itself with every shot fired).

I finally spent the money and went with a Night Force NXS 2.5-10x42 as a primary optic on mine and it's had no issues at all. On my wifes we put a Trijicon TriPower on it and it's been perfect as well.

Send optics to me for safekeeping.

Nope. All of mine have homes on rifles thank you very much. The SCAR 17's just need a bit better built optic and good rings and you're set. I've found what works great for me,

I've only ever ran a Trijicon TR24 or  Leupold Mk6 3-18 on my 17S, never had a problem with either.

jk: I couldn't leave my scarH alone with any optics.  It would constantly take little bits out of em all.  It got so bad I had to buy a second safe just to the scarH away from all the optics.

I have had one optic issue.  An Aimpoint M4S had short battery life problems. Sent it back to Aimpoint, and they replaced it.  Was it the scar's fault? I seriously doubt it.  I've had similar battery issues before with Aimpoint's.  I think it is more the heat in AZ then anything else.

Other optics: Leupold Mk4's and others, vortex sparc, razor, and PST, RMR, and finally iron sights.  Everything has worked perfectly with zero troubles from any of those optics makers.  Buy quality optics, and mounts and your troubles will be close to zero.  Put cheap crap on the rifle, and get cheap crap results.

I have ~5,000 rounds through my 13" SCAR Heavy split fairly evenly between an Aimpoint T1 and a Leupold VariX II 1.5 X 5 with no issues.

Mine ate a Vortex Viper PST 2.5-10x32.

I'm on my second one and I haven't had time to shoot it much yet, hoping the rebuilt scope has no issues. Also, changed the mount it was mounted in.

Ended up repurposing the LT-104 over to an AR. Mounted the rebuilt scope in an ADM Delta SSR mount.

Makes sense, it's not like you need the forward offset.

Right. I will say that I did like how the base was further to the rear, closer to the rear sight of the rifle. Maybe to me it seemed a bit more balanced. However, I believe the ADM was the proper way to go for this rifle.

Here are the differences.

As it sits now.

I still haven't found the time to get the damn scope sighted in. I found that all of the screws which hold the barrel in the rifle were torqued to a different spec, and this gun was bought around November 2012, right before to Mocha Messiah was coronated for the second time. Fixed that issue and I need to get back out and re-zero.

Mine has ruined 2 PA 1-6's, 1st and 2nd gen. And a Leupold 1-6 would not hold zero after quite a few thousand rounds.
Leupold fixed it and it's back on the rifle.

All scopes were in forward offset type mounts.

I've run a Leupold CQBSS 1.1-8x, Trijicon TA11 Acog, and a 1-4x Elcan without a single problem.

mine broke a 3.5 ACOG but it was promptly fixed bt trijicon.

Reading through this, it seems ACOGs are pretty gtg? I Have a TA31A and when I get my SCAR17 (If I can ever find one) I don't want it to eat that. The TA31A is from about 2008.... Would that make a difference?

I'm about to put a VX-R 3-9 on mine with an ADM mount.

I'm interested to see how long it holds.

Previous scope was an SWFA 3-9 in a Larue. Its since gone on another gun.

Tasco Silver Antler could possibly fail, I'll see if Jason can loan one for testing.

I'm trying an Aimpoint T1 for unsuppressed, and a Burris AR 308 for suppressed.  The Burris has the turning thing on the front that you like.  And the Kill Flash I like to keep me secret.

I had a propane heater with me at the range this past weekend. I sat behind me about 3-4 feet...approx 6 -7 feet from my muzzle.

When I took my first shot, I heard the heater just "take off". It sounded like a jet engine and started to glow red really red. I shut her down fearing it was going to go Chernobyl on me.

I tried starting it again, and while it stayed lit when depressing the pilot light button, the valve wouldn't remain open. Was a nice heater too.  I'm not sure how the concussion screwed up the thermocouple or the valve, but it did.

So there you have it...SCAR 17s kill optics and heaters.

i believe its from people not using quality mounts, installing the mounts incorrectly as in pulling the mount toward the rear in the pic slot, or using cheap counterfeit optics off amazon.chicom...   or some combination of that.

most delicate optic i run on mine is a flir rs64 thermal with no issues.  but im using a midwest industries qd mount and installing it correctly each time.  other optics are nightforce 2.5-10x, trijicon 6x48 acog and ta31fg

Is this a 17 specialty?
Is the 16 bolt/carrier that much lighter/gentle?

Yes. 16 bolt is much lighter and optics problems almost all seem to come from the 17.

A friend of mine told in SOCOM informed me eotech were failing on the SCAR Heavy, this was in part due to the fact they were running a AAC flash suppressor on the gun (w/no can) and it provided no recoil mitigation.  The SCAR 17s comes with the excellent PWS FSC30, which dampens the recoil, saving optics.
