Need help deciding between these two machineguns at my LGS. I already paid for the 614 Model but he is giving me the option to pay $3k more if I want the one rollmarked "M16." Both are formed as AR15's. Going to be using one of these as a shooter as I am keeping my M16A2 NIB. Should I spend the extra $3k for it so say "M16" on the receiver and have a gun with a higher serial number, meaning it's newer?

They're both effectively identical, factory machineguns. If you want an M16 rollmark enough to fork out $3k more, then do it - but the guns are pretty much the same.

Exactly. The only reason I'm thinking about it is for if I ever sell it, the "M16" looks better to a potential buyer therefore yielding more money and larger buyer market. I think if someone is going to shell out for a Colt they are going to want an M16 model.

IMO if you want a shooter get the AR15 but if you're looking for an investment piece get the M16 and take good care of it, it will go up a great deal in the future. |

I have and love a 614, I personally like the AR-15 roll mark combined with an "AUTO" selection. I wouldn't pay a penny more for M16, but would pay a bit more (not 3k..maybe 2k) for M16A1. As an old timer advised me when it comes to MG buying (a guy who owns literally millions in high-end guns) buy MGs based on condition, condition, condition. So bottom line, always buy the gun that is in the best shape.

I bought a 614 in 2013. It has gone up in value, percentage wise, on par with other Colt M16s.

Thanks for the replies. I'm just going to stay with the AR15 614 model. It will be perfect for my needs of being a good shooter. Pricing is fair compared to what is available for sale in my state and it is at my local range so I can shoot it while I wait for it. I wasn't trying to buy one over the internet without checking it out first, etc.
My opinion is based on the exponential amount of people that are pouring into the NFA niche of the gun community, with suppressors being the gateway for that, I see the registered transferables steadily increasing in value as demand will increase and supply will dry up or hold out for higher. I have been watching the mg market for many months now and I don't think people realise Colt AR/M16 market has hit a higher support level. |

A2s had dipped into the $25k range about a year ago. It doesn't take much extra supply to dip prices. Pretty much applies to everything.

prices have been going up over all lately on M16's....or at least the asking prices are...on GB i dont really see any that have sold.
A2's are the bargain right now.......none are meeting reserve and offers are $25k, but i dont see any selling for that price as reserves are higher |

The dealer called a few days later because he accidentally resold me a gun that had already been sold so he upgraded me to a NIB M16A2 at no additional charge. People are crazy if they believe M16's are going to get any cheaper than they are. It's is literally a limited commodity with the market only getting bigger on a yearly basis. ATF numbers for F4 NFA registration filed on an annual basis has been going up more than 20-30%+ the past few years, with suppressors being the majority, and you will see that spill into the machinegun market. |

The first two I purchased while I was still in the Army and paid a very low price for them and did not ask any questions on where they came from they are both A1 Vietnam era rifles, the last one I purchased was from a Sgt. that I served with who was diagnosed with terminal cancer and he shipped it to me, that is the one that I paid $9600 for. He did not have any kids and his wife didn't want to dispose of it after he passed away, he is a nice guy and him and I are very good friends.

I raised most of the money for the '16 by selling my two well-worn SP1 rifles (one of them a rare factory Coltguard) for $650 each, so I only needed to scrounge up another $700 for the MG (plus the $200 tax). And believe it or not, I really, really sweated about paying that much for a firearm!!!!
